Olympic champion Campbell tops the bill in hometown boxing night

Two title fights and a Commonwealth eliminator share the bill at Hull Ice Arena tonight yet the headline act is a young man who has designs on world domination.

Olympic champion Luke Campbell tops the bill on his return to his home city tonight as he meets journeyman Lee Connolly in his third professional fight.

Campbell, who weighed in yesterday half a pound lighter than the lightweight limit, is hoping to be taken further than he was in his first two bouts, when he knocked his opponents out inside the first three minutes.

The 26-year-old said: “I don’t expect this to be easy. I don’t take anyone for granted and I never will. I’ve prepared the same for this as I would any fight, I know this is going to be a tough test.”

The battle for the vacant IBF International title sees Hull’s Tommy Coyle – still smarting from his shock Commonwealth lightweight title defeat to Derry Matthews in July – tackle John Simpson.

Coyle was dominating Matthews when he was caught by a huge left that knocked him to the canvas and ended the contest.

“I put it down to a bit of inexperience and a lapse in concentration,” said Coyle.

“Lessons are blessings and in hindsight it was a blessing in disguise and comfortably believe I am out of those bad habits now.”

Leeds’s unbeaten featherweight Josh Warrington challenges Hull’s Samir Mouneimne for the vacant Commonwealth title.

Warrington, 22, has won all 15 of his fights, each of them going the distance, while Mouneimne, 26, has 12 bouts in a row since drawing his first fight.

Also tonight, unbeaten Sheffield heavyweight Richard Towers faces Australian Lucas Browne in a Commonwealth title eliminator.
