Warrington adds British title to Commonwealth crown

Josh Warrington added the vacant British featherweight title to his Commonwealth strap with a convincing points victory over Martin Lindsay at the First Direct Arena in Leeds.

The unbeaten Warrington (18-0, with two knockout wins) dominated throughout, dropping his overmatched Northern Irish foe in the ninth round, and although he could not stop the bout early, he was awarded a wide unanimous decision win.

All three judges scored the bout 119-110 in his favour to reflect the Yorkshireman’s dominance in front of a partisan crowd.

Elsewhere, Stephen Smith edged closer to a world title shot by winning the vacant WBC Silver super featherweight title when Argentinian opponent Mauricio Javier Munoz retired on his stool at the end of the eighth round.

The Liverpudlian (19-1, 12KOs) has now won his last seven bouts since suffering his only defeat against Lee Selby in 2011.

Kal Yafai claimed his first major belt since turning professional by winning the vacant Commonwealth super-flyweight crown with a third-round knockout of Yaqub Kareem.

Birmingham fighter Yafai extended his unbeaten record to 11-0 (8KOs).

Gavin McDonnell held on to his British super-bantamweight title following a hard-fought split draw with Josh Wale.
