BREAKING NEWS: Beckford stays

JERMAINE BECKFORD is staying at Leeds United.

The 26-year-old told manager Simon Grayson his intention to stay at Elland Road before yesterday's 2-0 defeat at Exeter City.

Beckford will remain with Leeds until the end of the season when he will be able to walk away on a free transfer due to his contract having run out.

The news will be a blow to Newcastle United, who only last week submitted a fourth bid for the striker of around 2m, an offer that was turned down by Leeds, who want the striker to remain and score the goals that will secure promotion.

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bolton Wanderers were also tracking the striker, who handed in an official transfer request on December 30.

His decision represents an amazing about-turn and United's hope now is that the decision will galvanise the squad after two disappointing results against Wycombe Wanderers and Exeter when they have collected just one point.
