Bresnan: I'll be fit and ready for England's Cup opener

YORKSHIRE star Tim Bresnan has revealed he will be fit to boost England's quest to win the World Cup.

Bresnan was forced out of the one-day series in Australia after suffering a calf injury during the second game in Hobart.

But the 25-year-old insists he will be ready for England's opening World Cup match against the Netherlands in Nagpur on February 22.

"The injury is steadily getting better," said Bresnan, who played a key role in England's Ashes win prior to the one-day-series.

"I'm having physio on a daily basis and will be fit for the opening World Cup game.

"I was very disappointed to get injured when I did because the more cricket I get under my belt for England, the better.

"On the flip side, it's a chance to have a bit of a break, do my rehab, get fit again and hopefully hit the ground running at the World Cup."

Bresnan believes the 50-over tournament being staged in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh can cap a golden year for English cricket.

In addition to their Ashes triumph, England won the World Twenty20 for the first time in the Caribbean last May – their first global trophy in one-day cricket.

"We'd never won the World Twenty20 before but we went and did that, and there's no reason we can't win the 50-over tournament as well," said Bresnan.

"It's going to be a tough challenge in the sub-continent conditions, but, if we play our best cricket, I firmly believe we can top off a momentous year in all forms of the game.

"We don't just want to become the best team in the world in Test cricket; we want to be the best team in the world in all formats.

"With the talent and strength in depth we've got, I believe we can do that."

Bresnan also predicted England will hit back to win the current one-day series against world champions Australia.

After losing the opening three matches of the seven-game rubber, England broke their duck with a 21-run win in Adelaide on Wednesday.

The fourth match takes place in Brisbane tomorrow before the teams head to Sydney on Wednesday and then on to Perth tomorrow week.

"We didn't play our best cricket in the first three games, but we bounced back well and I thoroughly expect us to win the series now," added Bresnan.
