Brodleians strike to beat freeze

Old Brodleians warmed the supporters who braved the bitterly cold conditions by twice coming from behind to clinch a 25-13 victory over Driffield.

The fixture was touch and go because of the freezing conditions but both sides decided to go ahead and Driffield had the better of the opening exchanges.

Winger Ali McLaren put them on their way with a try and a penalty from fly-half Jordan McGregor edged them 8-0 in front.

Ollie Ackroyed put the home side on the board with a penalty and after the break Brodleians sparked into life when winger Matty Hoyle carved his way through the Driffield defence to touch down.

Ackroyd's conversion gave his side the lead for the first time but it did not last long, McLaren again racing over to make it 13-10 to Driffield.

Brodleians were getting on top and some excellent forward play drove the visitors back and was eventually rewarded when hooker Ben Morrell found the room to go over.

This time, the home side did not let the lead slip and scrum-half Dale Gardener scampered over to extend their advantage. Ackroyd added the conversion and a later penalty to make the points secure.

Sandal's game with Ilkley was called off 10 minutes before kick-off because the visitors were unhappy with one section of the pitch.

Pontefract's pitch had been playable all week but their fixture with Morpeth had to be postponed when the temperature dropped to minus four centigrade.

Old Crossleyans' trip to Percy Park also fell foul of a frozen pitch leaving more fixture congestion ahead.
