Brown looks to future as coaching qualifications mount up

SCARBOROUGH’S Phil Brown is enjoying success in and out of the saddle, with the 25-year-old having taken another step up the coaching ladder.

Brown is experiencing a decent 2013 on the British Eventing front with David and Caroline White’s 10-year-old mare Miss Brodie having achieved three consecutive top-ten finishes in Novice events.

Brown is also competing on six-year-old Mill State, which he owns himself, and Joanna Newitt’s promising six-year-old Chilledbychoice.

But the Yorkshireman’s main focus is on his burgeoning career in coaching, with Brown having recently achieved his British Eventing Development Coach accreditation to go alongside his BHSAI and UKCC Level II certifications.

In obtaining Development Coach status, Brown has joined an elite list of about 200 people qualified to this level throughout the UK. But he sees his achievement as another step up the ladder as opposed to a cause for celebration, with the Yorkshireman now looking forward to running clinics for cross country and showjumping this summer.

“Having the BE accreditation will help give people confidence in how I prepare them for competition,” he said.

“And confidence is often key to the success of a horse and rider combination.

“There is a real sense of achievement watching someone you have taught enter their first BE class with confidence and come back with a smile on their face.

“Because I am competing myself I know exactly how nerve-wracking it can be! Watching a team that you have coached achieve success can be as exciting and rewarding as competing yourself.”

Brown was in action last weekend at the Skipton Horse Trials where Miss Brodie was eighth in her Novice class. And now the newly accredited Development Coach is sure to be in demand this summer with his specialised training clinics at Thornthorpe Equestrian Manor Farm.

Showjumping sessions will be staged on Saturday, July 20 and the cross country training will take place a fortnight later on Saturday, August 3.

Nicola Wilson reports her Olympic hero Opposition Buzz to be safe and well following his fall on the cross-country course in the four-star event at Luhmuhlen in Germany.

Wilson and Opposition Buzz were sat a fine 11th after the dressage phase but the Northallerton rider’s mount stumbled on landing after jumping into the first water in Saturday’s cross-country test.

He then took off a stride early to the step out and had nowhere to go, hitting the step with his knee, which brought the 16-year-old down.
