Brown sets standard for Britain

Great Britain were celebrating a return of two gold medals and three silvers on the final day of the Paralympic Archery World Championships in Turin yesterday.

Yorkshire’s Danielle Brown gave GB the perfect start to the day as she claimed her second successive world title by winning compound individual gold, comfortably defeating Russia’s Stepanida Artakhinova 7-3 in the final.

There was also gold in the men’s team compound event where John Stubbs, Richard Hennahane and Eric Thomas saw off the challenge of Korea in a tense final which saw the British archers win by three points.

Stubbs had to settle for silver in the individual final, however, after losing to Switzerland’s Philippe Horner, while he also picked up a silver in the mixed team final alongside Brown against a Russian team of Artakhinova and Mikhail Diktovannyy. Brown, alongside Pippa Britton and Sarah Beamish, also suffered a defeat to Artakhinova and the Russians in the women’s compound team final as GB earned another silver.

Reflecting back on his side’s efforts in Italy, Archery GB Paralympic head coach Tim Hazell said: “We’ve had a fantastic week, and returning home with two golds and three silvers is just superb.

“Dani has proved beyond doubt that she’s the best in the world, while John was in great form, but Horner was just a bit better. But I was delighted that John finally got that gold in the team final, and I’m delighted for Richard and Eric. This is their reward for incredible hard work, not just during the week, but in the past months”
