Brownlee brothers share double triathlon success in Budapest finale

ALISTAIR Brownlee put a troubled triathlon season behind him to win the final round of the ITU World Championship in Budapest, before watching younger brother Jonathan claim the under-23 crown.

Alistair has endured a frustrating time since becoming world champion last year, highlighted by problems with heatstroke in Hyde Park and a 40th-place finish in Kitzbuhel last time out, but he edged out Javier Gomez of Spain in the run to claim a morale-boosting victory.

And he then saw his brother win emphatically to claim the world under-23 title.

Leeds's Brownlee said: "The last five, six weeks have been really hard with heat exhaustion, fatigue and the injury at the beginning of the year. It's fantastic to come out and race here today. I really didn't know how it was going to go."

RICH HUNT retained his Leeds Triathlon title in a strong field of 350 male and female competitors at Roundhay Park yesterday. Hunt broke the course record by two minutes, while the winner of the women's race was more of a surprise as Rachael Bamford of Otley AC clinched the title in only her first year as a triathlete.

Holmfirth Harriers scored a double success winning the men's six-stage race and the women winning their four-stage event at the Yorkshire Road Relays Championships at Carnegie College, Leeds, on Saturday.

In the men's race the Holmfirth squad took the lead on the first stage through Dave Watson who clocked 20:05 for the four-mile course. Bingley then had a turn in the lead through Tim Midgley and Stephen Bailey before Matthew Pierson took Holmfirth back in front with a fine run.

Alan Buckley (19:56) took Leeds City's B team in front on the penultimate leg before Mark Buckingham put the issue beyond doubt for the Holmfirth team, his 19:34 being easily the fastest of the race. Bingley were runners-up with Leeds City's B team third.

Defending champions Hallamshire, below full strength, finished seventh.

In the women's race Jenny Walsh led Spenborough home on the first stage, her time of 15:21 being the fastest of the race. Katherine Farquhar was in second for Holmfirth who won the team event ahead of Bingley and defending champions Rotherham.
