Brownlee brothers on top of podium together

Brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee, from Leeds, completed a Great Britain one-two in the ITU World Championship race in Madrid at the weekend.

Elder brother Alistair completed his third successive win in the Spanish event and Jonathan took silver after the pair held off home favourite Javier Gomez in a strong running section.

The pair even had time for a showpiece finish as 23-year-old Alistair, who had broken clear in the last kilometre, waited to link arms with his brother before crossing the line first.

It was the siblings’ first time together on the podium and Alistair said: “It had to happen some time and why not have it happen in Madrid, a race where I have done really well and such a fantastic course.”

Twenty-one-year-old Jonathan added: “It was really good, we train hard together and it’s a bit strange because we’ve done it in small races but never in a world series.

“It’s a bit of a strange feeling but really nice that he waited for me – it was really a special moment.”

Great Britain’s Helen Jenkins was edged out for gold but clinched an impressive second-place finish in the women’s event in Madrid.

The 27-year-old was outsprinted by Canadian Paula Findlay in the race for the line, and her time of 2:03.49 put her three seconds down on the winner.

However, Jenkins achieved her podium goal, and another top-three finish from the Hyde Park leg of the World Championship series or the Grand Final in Beijing will guarantee her a place in next year’s London Olympics.
