The 23-year-old from Leeds, who was also winning this race for the second year in a row, led almost from start to finish in the Spanish capital.

He was in the lead group out of the water, led a breakaway group in the bike leg of the race and never looked back as he completed the race in 1hr 50mins 42 secs.

“It’s a good triathlon course this one, as I keep saying it’s a pure triathlon course,” Brownlee said.

“Our group was incredible there, all the other riders did turns throughout the race and it was a fair race, I think, so I enjoyed it but it was tough, it’s always tough.”

Javier Gomez finished second on home soil to claim the lead in the overall 2013 series standings, while Russia’s Ivan Vasiliev was third.

Brownlee’s brother Alistair – the reigning Olympic champion – missed yesterday’s race because of an ankle injury.

Great Britain’s double Olympic champion Mo Farah had his first Diamond League outing of the year, taking second place in the 5,000m in Eugene, Oregon.

Farah, who has suffered with a stomach virus in recent weeks, posted a season-best time of 13min 5.88secs. Kenya’s Edwin Soi won in a world-leading 13:04.75.

Ethiopia’s Yenew Alamirew was third, while Farah’s compatriot Chris Thompson finished a distant 20th.

Farah won the 5,000m in Eugene last year in 12:56.98, the fastest time run in the United States.

That result came just weeks before he claimed his emotional 5,000m-10,000m double gold at London 2012, but a repeat showing was never on the cards at the weekend with his performance no doubt affected by his recent illness.

Farah had been due to contest the 10,000m alongside world record holder Kenenisa Bekele, but elected to give himself an extra day’s rest and contest only the shorter distance.

The blue-riband men’s 100m was won by Justin Gatland in a time of 9.88secs, just two hundredths of a second outside the 2013 world leader set by Tyson Gay in early May.

Hallamshire’s Andy Heyes ran 3mins 45secs for 1,500m when he finished fourth in a British Milers Club race at Manchester on Saturday.

It was a personal best for Heyes, who was disappointed the previous week when he was beaten in the Yorkshire Championship.

There was a personal best also for Otley’s Yorkshire champion Racheal Bamford when she clocked 4:16.38 for third place in her 1,500m event.

And Leeds City’s Joe Townsend set a personal milestone when he clocked 14:17.37 in the 5,000m.

Skyrac junior Jordan Bransberg ran 1:50.60 for third place in his 800m race.
