It looked like Tigers would run away with the game but they lost their momentum and Hull hit back through Ben Thoy after 32 minutes, James Cameron adding the extras.

Carrington made it 16-7 going into the break with another penalty but that was to be the last of their points as Hull took control.

Their pressure paid off 15 minutes after the restart as Joseph Stafford ran in Hull’s second try of the game. Cameron added two penalties to clinch the victory.

Cameron was especially impressive for the visitors and as the ground got heavier with a downpour in the final 15 minutes, the fly half controlled proceedings with some accurate kicking.

Otley suffered a 21-9 defeat to Leicester Lions.

Although both sides suffered from a huge penalty count, Otley were more disadvantaged having hooker Ben Steele and No 8 Dan Temm yellow-carded.

They also conceded penalty tries on 26 and 70 minutes, Lions’ fly-half Jonathan Boden being sin-binned as early as the fourth minute

Otley made a promising start, Temm prominent immediately and they went ahead with a 50-metre penalty from fly-half Mark Ireland. Suspect handling, though. continually let them down when openings were created and they went behind when referee Boscowen lost patience as they scrambled to protect their line, awarding a penalty try converted by Boden.

Upping their game after the break Otley gave the impression they could take over, Ireland landing another long-distance penalty, but they were constantly driven back by penalties and when an interception took Lions the length of the field a succession of them heralded a second converted penalty try.

A third penalty from Ireland raised hopes but whilst without Temm they failed to cover a break from a mid-field scrum, centre Sam Smith crashing over and Boden converting to deny Otley a bonus point.

Harrogate’s mini-revival came to an end as they were beaten
24-17 at Caldy, and lost hooker Steve Maycock to a broken arm.

After a disastrous start, Harrogate recovered from an early 12-0 deficit to be only two points behind at the interval. They led in the second half and had the bulk of possession but two opportunistic Caldy tries were enough for them to win an exciting contest.

Derek Salisbury scored two tries from driving mauls as Caldy built a platform.

Danny Matthews and Joe Rowntree roused a Harrogate responsewith Dan Metcalfe the beneficiary after a driving maul. Rowntree converted and then added a penalty before the break.

Oli Denton’s pace took him through the Caldy defence for an excellent try. Rowntree’s touchline conversion made it 17-12.

Concerted Harrogate attacks followed but were contained by a well-organised Caldy defence. Two Caldy tries in as many minutes then effectively decided the contest, John Broxson and Gavin Roberts both finding space to cut through the Harrogate defence and score. Already without Maycock, Harrogate then lost their replacement hooker as their attempts to rally were thwarted.
