Cavendish follows in Elliott's footsteps

Mark Cavendish won the points jersey at the Vuelta a Espana yesterday – becoming the first Briton in 21 years to earn the sprinters' title at a Grand Tour.

The Manxman, 25, held on to the green jersey despite American rival Tyler Farrar winning the final stage in Madrid.

Cavendish, who has won three stages for HTC-Columbia in this year's race, is only the second Briton to secure a sprinters' title in one of the Grand Tours following Sheffield's Malcolm Elliott's 1989 success.
