Challenge of Baldwin and Watson seen off as Clough secures win

NORTHALLERTON rider Noel Clough secured victory in the fifth round of the Yorkshire Points Series, staged at Huddersfield New College yesterday.

The Fietsen Tempo rider beat Tim Baldwin and Rob Watson, both of Paul Milnes-Bradford Olympic RC, into second and third respectively over a challenging course at the college.

While Baldwin was chasing Clough alone, Watson just held off Batley CC rival Jonny Limebear for the final podium spot, while Wakefield Tri Club's Tom Randle was also pressing for a top-three placing.

The event incorporated the Yorkshire Under-12 Championships, with Ben Waite (City RC Hull) taking the win, while Nicole Stiff (Pedalsport CC) was top Under-12 girl.

In hill-climbing, Yorkshire Road Club cycling ace Carl Saint had to settle for second spot in the Yorkshire Velo event on Cragg Vale at Mytholmroyd on Sunday, being pipped to victory by seven seconds by London visitor Chris Beales (Sigma Sport).

Saint, from Slaithwaite, clocked 17min 30.9sec for the 4.81-mile climb of Cragg Vale, which is reputed to be the longest continuous ascent in England. But Beales was a class apart on the climb, the Australian clocking 16-33.1 to take a convincing victory ahead of the National Championships in a fortnight.

Blackburn and District CTC duo Ian Stott and Carl Helliwell took third and fourth respectively, while the next best Yorkshire rider was Leeds-based Doug Hart (Yorkshire Velo) who covered the course in 18:48.2. Elsewhere in the top 10, Burley-in-Wharfedale's Ged Millward took seventh for Otley CC, while Driffield's Andrew Askwith of Bridlington CC was eighth.

Event organiser Blair Buss was top veteran in ninth, while Sheffrec CC's Liam O'Toole was best juvenile.
