Change of venue suits Huddersfield’s Klekner

Huddersfield-based rider Jiri Klekner secured his first victory in the Yorkshire Points Series when he took a solo win in round six of the prestigious series at Huddersfield New College yesterday.

The 28-year-old Wheelspin Cycles man crossed the line 47 seconds ahead of his nearest rival Benny Pygott (Paul Milnes-Bradford Olympic RT), while Simon Maudsley (Dirt Wheels) was another 23 seconds off the pace in third.

The course used – which was different to the usual course because of remodelling at the venue – was bathed in sunny and largely dry conditions which made for some great racing.

Keighley brothers Chris and Mike Young finished first and second in the veterans race, while their Pedalsport CC team-mate Chris Taylor ensured a clean sweep of the podium for the club.

Sheffield teenager Hannah Saville (Norton Wheelers) settled for second in the women’s race, with Lancashire visitor Juliet Horrocks (Hope Factory Racing) taking the win, while Keighley’s Alfie Moses won the youth race, the Paul Milnes RT rider beating Pedalsport’s Robert Scott.

In hill-climbing, Leeds rider James Gullen secured victory in the Yorkshire Road Club two-stage event at New Inn, Eccup, on Saturday.

Gullen, 24 and riding for the Hope Factory Racing team, clocked 2min 1.4sec for the first climb of Weardley Bank, which was 7.1sec quicker than runner-up Sam Ward, the 34-year-old Dirtwheels Cycles rider from Otley.

And in the second, longer ascent of the climb, he clocked 4min 43.1sec to win by 37sec from David Watson (Coventry CC). That gave him overall victory by 45sec from Ward.

But on Sunday, Gullen had to settle for second in the North Lancashire Road Club event on the Nick O’Pendle climb.

In the Matlock CC climb of Bank Road in Derbyshire, Rotherham’s James Allen took the win by two seconds. The Langsett Cycles rider clocked 1 min 52.6 sec, beating Lee Baldwin (Buxton CC). But on the climb of Riber, Allen had to settle for third place with Adam Kenway winning.
