Clan’s potential all too clear to Steelers’ Sarich

DEFENCEMAN Rod Sarich says Elite League leaders Sheffield Steelers head to Scotland tonight fully aware of the potential for upset posed by hosts the Braehead Clan.

The Steelers go into the fixture with a four-point advantage over second-placed Cardiff Devils, who have a game in hand.

Although Steelers only picked up a point in their 4-3 home defeat on a shoot-out to the Nottingham Panthers on Saturday, their title cause was handed a significant boost the previous night when Cardiff went down 7-1 at Braehead. The Steelers lost 4-0 to the Clan at home in October but enjoyed success on their visit to Braehead Arena a month later in a 5-2 win.

Sarich said Friday night’s defeat of Cardiff once again highlighted Braehead’s potential for upsetting the odds and explained why, in their first season, they could pip reigning champions Coventry Blaze to fifth place.

“We certainly won’t be taking them lightly – they are a very good team,” said Sarich. “They’ve shown already what they are capable of and if they were to finish the regular season in fifth it would be some achievement.”
