Clark back to boost Steelers’ title bid

ice hockey: Forward Neil Clark said he had no hesitation in returning for a second season with Sheffield Steelers.

The 29-year-old Canadian was one of the welcome surprises under player-coach Ben Simon in last season’s championship-winning campaign, which saw the Steelers lift their third Elite League regular season title.

Signed by former coach Dave Matsos – who quit last summer – Clark quickly adapted to life under rookie coach Simon, contributing 38 goals in a career-best 71-point haul.

Seen as a similar type of player to new arrival Colt King – whose signing was announced on Tuesday – Clark is seen by new Steelers’ player-coach Ryan Finnerty as a key component of the team’s title defence.

“Goals are key and this guy has the habit of finding the back of the net,” said Finnerty.

“It’s important that we have a core group of guys back next year and Neil is right at the core of our team. He is well-liked in the room, a team guy and a winner.”

Clark added: “My role will be pretty much the same, to work hard and try and contribute in any and every way possible.”
