Classic winning duo top Leger list

Classic winners Blue Bunting and Treasure Beach are among a quality 36-strong entry for the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster on September 10.

The former, trained by Mahmood Al Zarooni, has won both the 1000 Guineas and Irish Oaks while Treasure Beach landed the Irish Derby for Aidan O’Brien after finishing second to Pour Moi in the Investec Derby.

They are 10-1 and 8-1 respectively with the sponsors, whose 4-1 favourite is Nathaniel, who is trained by three-time race winner John Gosden.

Nathaniel, impressive winner of the King Edward VII Stakes, goes for the King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes after being supplemented for Saturday’s Ascot showpiece.

Gosden has three other possibles, Bahrain Trophy victor Masked Marvel, Thimaar and Buthelezi.

Blue Bunting is one of four entries for Godolphin trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni along with Casamento, Genius Beast and French Navy.

Fellow Godolphin trainer Saeed bin Suroor has just Leicester maiden winner Laatafreet this time.

Treasure Beach is one of 10 from the O’Brien stable that has three St Leger wins.

Also among the Ballydoyle contingent is Seville, Wonder Of Wonders and Memphis Tennessee.

Queen’s Vase victor Namibian is one of four entries from Mark Johnston’s Middleham stable, along with Dordogne, Eternal Heart and Sadler’s Risk.

Top Newmarket trainers with Leger triumphs are Sir Michael Stoute, who has two possibles in King Edward VII runner-up Fiorente and Sea Moon, and Sir Henry Cecil with Solar Sky and Wild Coco.

Soccer star Michael Owen could seek a first Classic victory with his home-bred colt, the Tom Dascombe-trained Brown Panther, winner of the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot and fifth in the German Derby.

The Yorkshire Racing Summer Festival continued at a rather soggy Catterick, but Stormy Whatever had no problems with the soft underfoot conditions and opened his account at the second time of asking in the British Stallion Studs Supporting British Racing EBF Maiden.

While many of his rivals toiled in the ground, Stormy Whatever was always handily placed in the hands of Frederik Tylicki and kicked clear in the last of the six furlongs to score by three and three-quarter lengths from Blue Shoes.

“He’s a lovely horse and he loved the ground,” said Given.

“He had the experience of running round here so we knew he’d handle the track and he was ideally drawn in stall one. He’s a bonny horse and he should go on from here and get a mile in time.”

Lady Jourdain was backed as if defeat was out of the question in the St Teresa’s Hospice Selling Stakes and rewarded her supporters with a ready victory.

A winner at Ripon on Saturday, the Elaine Burke-trained filly was supported from 4-6 to 4-9 to follow up and ultimately had no problems.

However, those who took the odds-on may have been sweating as jockey Andrew Elliott pushed along on the jolly before the turn for home.

But once straightened up, Elliott soon bagged the rail and his mount stayed on strongly to secure a four-and-a-half-length verdict over Jaci Uzzi.

Burke’s husband Karl, based locally at Middleham, said: “We probably wouldn’t have run her if it had meant a long journey as it came quick enough after Saturday. But as it was on our doorstep we thought we might as well take our chance and she has done it well.”

The Keith Dalgleish-trained Act Your Shoe Size was a narrow winner of what looked a competitive Producers Nursery, the 6-1 chance was making his handicap debut off a mark of 68.
