Clean sweep as England dominate hurdles

European champion Andy Turner marked the end of a "dream" season with Commonwealth Games gold on an evening which saw the Home Nations collect seven medals in Delhi.

Three came as Turner led an England clean sweep in the men's 110m hurdles, with William Sharman taking silver and Lawrence Clarke bronze.

England's Martin Brockman clinched decathlon bronze, while his compatriots Alex Smith and Mike Floyd were second and third, respectively, in the men's hammer and Steph Twell secured women's 1,500m bronze.

Earlier in the evening Katherine Endacott finally received her bronze medal earned in Thursday night's women's 100m final after Sally Pearson of Australia was disqualified.

But the highlight of an evening which saw the first Commonwealth Games athletics medal for an Indian woman – Kavita Raut in the women's 10,000m – was Turner's hurdles triumph.

The 30-year-old Sale Harrier, who won European gold in Barcelona in July, triumphed in 13.38 seconds, with Sharman second in 13.50 and Clarke taking bronze by 0.01secs in 13.70.

Turner, who won Commonwealth bronze in Melbourne four years ago, was thrilled to complete his 2010 season with another major title.

"I knew it was going to be hard but as time's gone on the dream of doubling up on the gold medal grew and grew," he said.

"I'm chuffed to bits that I managed to finish my season with a gold medal here. It's been an amazing season and now it's a dream season."

Twell held off the challenge of England's Hannah England to claim 1,500m bronze behind Olympic champion Nancy Langat of Kenya and Nikki Hamblin of New Zealand.

Brockman expressed surprise after his personal best total of 7,712 points secured decathlon bronze behind Canada's Jamie Adjetey-Nelson.

The 22-year-old from Maidstone, Kent, who set seven personal bests across the 10 events, said: "To go home with a medal is just crazy."
