Commonwealth Games: It's a golden hat-trick for Jack Laugher

JACK LAUGHER won his third gold of the Games today as he and his partner Chris Mears won the 3m synchronised springboard event on Gold Coast.

Harrogate’s Laugher had already won the 1m and 3m springboard events before partnering Leeds’ Mears to more glory as Canada and hosts Australia took silver and bronze, respectively.

Sheffield brothers Jack and Ross Haslam finished fifth.

Leeds’ Katherine Torrence and Alicia Blagg finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the final of the 1m springboard final won by Scotland’s Grace Reid as the hosts claimed silver and bronze through Georgia Sheehan and Esther Qin.

Leeds-based diver Dan Goodfellow has earlier teamed up with Tom Daley to claim gold in the 10m synchronised springboard event. Hearts were in mouths when Goodfellow over-rotated in the pairs’ final dive but the lead they had previously built was big enough to withstand the error.

Sheffield’s Natasha Gale crashed out of the women’s 75kg boxing event just a win away from a medal, losing to Australia’s Caitlin Parker.

Pontefract’s James Willstrop and Sheffield’s Nick Matthews are through to the semi-final of the men’s squash doubles event after beating Vikram Malhotra and Ramit Tandon 2-1. The semi-final is early on Saturday morning where they will play fellow English duo Daryl Selby and Adrian Waller. Willstrop won gold earlier in the week in the men’s singles event after failing at the final hurdle in that event in 2010 and 2014.

There was dissapointment overnight for Jenny Duncalf as she was knocked out of the women’s doubles at the quarter-final stage with her partner Alison Walters at the hands of New Zealand pair Joelle King and Amanda Landers-Murphy, losing 2-0.

Leeds’ Alex Bell fell two seconds short of a medal in the final of the women’s 800m. She finished fifth as Caster Semenya, of South Africa, took gold.

Sheffield-based Alicia Barrett finished her 100m hurdles journey by finishing eigth in the final.

Badminton pair Gabby Adcock, from Leeds, and husband Chris made it through to the mixed doubles semi-finals after beating the Australian pairing of Sawan Serasighe and Setyana Mapasa 2-1.

Huddersfield’s Marcus Ellis finds himself a busy man after getting into both the men’s doubles and the mixed doubles semi-finals.
