Commonwealth Games: Luke Cutts vaults to bronze to deny Adam Hague

A very tough battle between him and Sheffield and Dearne training partner Adam Hague saw Cutts clinch bronze by the very slightest of margins.

Both cleared 5.45m and had just two rivals against them in the hunt for medals.

The club-mates had shared many close battles, with 21-year-old Hague finally looking to be surpassing his 30-year-old training partner this season with a recent surge in form.

However, this time it was the veteran who came out on top, with his first-time clearance of 5.45m proving the vital difference in the battle for bronze, as Hague’s clearance at the second attempt saw him just lose out after both failed to clear 5.55m.

This latest Commonwealth success sees Cutts add to his silver medal he won at Glasgow in 2014, setting him up nicely for the 2018 outdoor season, while former European junior champion Hague will be hopeful of more stabs at the senior international stage.

A very tough 800m heat, featuring dominant Olympic and World champion Caster Semenya, did nothing to phase Pudsey and Bramley runner Alexandra Bell, who stormed to a personal best of 2mins 00.11secs to book her place in tomorrow’s final.

The 25-year-old becomes England and Britain’s only representative in the final, all after being selected as a late edition to the England team following late withdrawals.

Another late selection also set for a Commonwealth final is Sheffield Hallam student Alicia Barrett, with the 20-year-old producing a season’s best 100m hurdles time of 13.19 to clinch the last qualifying spot.
