County‘s prospects get the call for Britain at European events

YOUNG riders will be getting a chance to shine in the next few weeks and several from Yorkshire have been selected to represent Britain.

The FEI European Dressage Championships for Young Riders and Juniors will take place at Berne in Switzerland from July 8-15. It will be the first time in 18 years that Switzerland has hosted the event.

The pony dressage team will travel to Fontainebleu in France for their European Championships from July 17-22.

The junior team will include Jessica Knapton, 17, from Hull, riding Remarkable.

Among the pony team members are Maisie Scruton, 15, from Westella, Hull riding Rembrandt DDH and Erin Williams, 14, from Baslow, Derbyshire, riding Dynasty.

Following her performance at the recent Charles Owen British National Pony Championships at Brand Hall in Shropshire, Laura Birley, 15, and her pony Otto have been selected as part of the British Pony eventing squad for the FEI European Pony Championships and will be reserves for the team.

Laura, who is a pupil at Leeds Grammar School, will join the rest of the squad for a final run before the Europeans at Barbury Castle in Wiltshire at the end of this month. The European Championships will be held at Fontainebleau in France in July.

Northallerton Riding Club had a winning weekend at the recent British Riding Clubs NAF Festival of the Horse National Championships at Aston-le-Walls.

Their junior pairs team of Catherine Harston, riding Take a Peek, and Jessica Bedi, riding Kilgreny Sweet Promise, claimed victory by just 0.4 points to become national champions.

The intermediate team were placed second, again winning by less than a point. The team members were Leanne Anderson, Jack Bagley, Chloe Bell and Jessica Bedi.

The club also sent riders to compete in the combined training, showing and novice team sections.
