Coventry 18 Otley 10: Otley denied late on despite commendable effort following Luffman's motorway heroics

Quick action from coach Mark Luffman averted a major accident on the M1 en route to Coventry when, sensing the driver was in difficulties, he grabbed the steering wheel and managed to prevent the bus crashing through the central reservation.

The driver received medical attention but there were no injuries and the players were unanimous in wanting to play and negotiations led to a 4.15pm start.

None the worse for their experience, Otley almost went ahead with full-back Christian Georgiou just wide with a long-range penalty but they fell behind when a deliberate knock-on gave scrum-half Lee Audis a simple penalty. Looking the better side, Otley moved ahead when excellent approach work led to winger James Twomey setting up skipper Jamie Sutton for a try, Georgiou converting but a second penalty from Audis bought Coventry back.

Otley continued to boss the game but a a yellow card for Sutton saw their depleted pack driven over again, Audis making the touchdown but they kept their rhythm and Georgiou took them to within a single point with a penalty on 70 minutes.

Invigorated, Otley strengthened their efforts but failed to break the home defence and disaster struck in the final minute. A penalty into the corner set Coventry up for the drive and their heavier pack ground their way over, Dale Ager grounding for fly-half Elliot Read to convert from wide out, denying Otley the bonus point which was the least they deserved.
