Cricket latest: Gale enjoys opening day with Yorkshire

Andrew Gale's first decision as a new captain in the LV County Championship paid off as Yorkshire secured maximum bowling points by tea against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

The opening day of the Division One meeting went Gale's way when he won the toss and received maximum support from his quartet of seamers in dismissing the home side for 217.

On a pitch offering some movement, Warwickshire lost seven wickets in 30 overs in the afternoon session, and on three occasions Gale was rewarded for his bowling changes as a wicket went down in the first over of a new spell.

Yorkshire, left with 36 overs to bat, relied on Joe Sayers, making 50 from 86 balls, as they reached 128 for three in an encouraging start for a side who finished last summer fighting to stave off relegation.

With the old pavilion and three stands demolished in a re-development project, Edgbaston presented a strange backdrop when Gale, at 26 Yorkshire's youngest post-war captain, celebrated a wicket in the fourth over.

Former Essex opener Varun Chopra, having faced only nine balls on his debut, was lbw to Ajmal Shazhad, but skipper Ian Westwood kept Warwickshire on a steady course by batting beyond lunch for his workmanlike 39.

Only 16 days after finishing a Test match in Bangladesh, Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott found themselves batting for their county on a bright spring morning, but the two England players were dismissed in the space of 17 balls.

Bell looked in good touch, with six boundaries, three of these in four balls from young seamer Oliver Hannon-Dalby, but on reaching 31 he was surprised by Tim Bresnan's lift from a good length. Jonathan Bairstow held this chance and another that came his way from Trott (7) in a carbon-copy dismissal by Steve Patterson.

Westwood was finally lbw to Hannon-Dalby's second delivery on re-joining the attack, and Warwickshire's middle suddenly looked flaky when Shazhad accounted for Jim Troughton (39) with a left-handed catch by former captain Anthony McGrath.

Tim Ambrose and Chris Woakes went in successive overs from Patterson (three for 51) and it was as well that Neil Carter came to his team's rescue with a typically vibrant 41 from 36 balls.

The left hander hit seven fours until he was deceived by Adil Rashid, hitting across the leg sinner, and Naqaash Tahir, his partner in a stand of 47, miscued Bresnan to mid-on.

Shazhad (three for 40) wrapped up the innings when new overseas signing Imran Tahir gave Jacques Rudolph his second catch in the slips.

Warwickshire's seamers then took their turn to exploit the early-season conditions. Adam Lyth fell at third slip in Woakes' third over and former captain McGrath, on one of his favourite grounds, came up short this time when caught behind off Naqaash.

Imran dislodged Sayers when the opener lifted his back foot and was stumped by Ambrose after a stand of 62 with Rudolph (43 not out).
