Cricket latest: Lyth first to 1,000 runs

YORKSHIRE's Adam Lyth became the first man to reach 1,000 first-class runs in England this summer on the opening day of the County Championship match against Warwickshire at Headingley Carnegie.

The White Rose are 192-3 at tea with Gerard Brophy unbeaten on 21 and Jonathan Bairstow undefeated on 12 as Yorkshire look to build a sizeable first innings total.

After lunching on 119-1, Yorkshire lost Lyth and Anthony McGrath during the afternoon session as Warwickshire mounted a recovery of sorts.

McGrath fell with the total on 153 when he edged Neil Carter to Darren Maddy at first slip, the former England all-rounder scoring 57 - his tenth fifty in his last 11 Championship innings.

Lyth, with whom McGrath shared a second-wicket stand of 148, went on to 84 before he was lbw to a full ball from Carter.

Lyth was dropped on 81 by Maddy off Rikki Clarke and became the first man in England to pass 1,000 first-class runs this summer during the course of his innings.

Lyth arrived at the landmark when he made 18 and the left-hander was unbeaten on 69 out of a total of 119-1 at lunch after Yorkshire won the toss.

The wicket to fall was that of acting captain Jacques Rudolph, caught at second slip by Rikki Clarke off Neil Carter for a duck.

Rudolph fell with the total on five and has not been in the best of form of late.

McGrath - fit to play after missing yesterday's Twenty20 game between the sides with a thumb injury - had a life on 41 when he was dropped by Clarke at second slip off Steffan Piolet.

Joe Sayers is still absent with a respiratory problem.

Yorkshire: Lyth, Rudolph (captain), McGrath, Bairstow, Brophy, Rashid, Pyrah, Rafiq, best, Patterson, Hannon-Dalby.
