Cricket latest: Yorkshire set 299 to beat Durham

YORKSHIRE are on target to win their County Championship match against Durham at Chester-le-Street.

At tea on day three, they are 120-1 in their second innings, requiring another 179 runs to complete their fifth Championship victory of the season.

Set 299 after Steve Patterson took the last Durham wicket to fall two balls after lunch, bowling Chris Rushworth, Yorkshire replied strongly through Adam Lyth and Jacques Rudolph.

The openers added 113 in 28 overs before Lyth fell in the penultimate over before tea, caught at second slip by Michael Di Venuto off Ben Stokes.

Rudolph is unbeaten on 68 and Anthony McGrath undefeated on nought as Yorkshire look to keep up the pressure on leaders Nottinghamshire.

The home team went into lunch on 340-9, a lead of 298, after resuming on 207-6 overnight.

And they failed to add another run as they closed their second innings on 340, setting Yorkshire a target of 299 for victory in just under five sessions.

It was a frustrating morning session for the visitors, who had hoped to keep the lead below 250.

But some spirited resistance from Dale Benkenstein and the lower-order means Yorkshire will need to bat well to win the match.

Yorkshire did not strike until 50 minutes into the morning, Oliver Hannon-Dalby having Liam Plunkett caught at second slip by Jonathan Bairstow for 30.

Plunkett added 78 for the seventh-wicket with Benkenstein in 20 overs.

Benkenstein and Mitch Claydon then added 43 before the latter was lbw to a full-length ball from Ajmal Shahzad for 29.

Benkenstein was ninth man out on 304 when he was caught behind off Steve Patterson for 74.
