The opening batsman has not played international cricket since 2015, when he made seven Test appearances against New Zealand and Australia.

Lyth by no means disgraced himself against strong opposition and memorably scored a century against New Zealand in the Headingley Test.

The 32-year-old was one of the many tried and, some would say, too hastily discarded as England sought a long-term partner for former captain Alastair Cook.

Rory Burns, Dominic Sibley, Zak Crawley and Keaton Jennings are the men in or around the opening roles at present, but Lyth remains hungry for a return to Test level.

“If I put in some really big performances, get some big hundreds and win games for Yorkshire, there’s no reason why I can’t get back in that England team,” he said.

“That is definitely at the back of my mind but, first and foremost, it’s all about helping Yorkshire to win games and trophies.”

Lyth’s new deal runs until the end of 2022 and reiterates his love for a club for which he made his first-class debut in 2007.

The Whitby-born left-hander remains one of the most stylish players around and a key figure as Yorkshire chase their first County Championship title since 2015.

“I can’t see myself playing anywhere else,” said Lyth, who has scored more than 10,000 first-class runs for the county. “There were no real negotiations there; it was really, really simple to put pen to paper.

“It’s my testimonial this year, so it’s nice to get everything sorted, and we’ve got a very strong squad that will, hopefully, do well. I believe I’ve still got plenty more years left as a player and it still means everything to pull on the White Rose.”
