Ali swings in before Shutt paves the way

AFTER defeats in their first three matches, Sheffield United gained lift-off with a four-wicket home success against Cleethorpes, who have now lost three in a row.

United's hero was left-arm swing bowler Zafran Ali, who took 8-24 in 9.2 overs, including three maidens, as Cleethorpes were ousted for 147 in 44 overs. Bill Kirby made 39 for the visitors and when United batted, leg-spinner Alex Osmond took 5-41 but an undefeated half-century from Reece Shutt helped United to victory in 35 overs.

Hull lost by nine wickets at Barnsley. Captain David Barrick and opener Chris Grey shared a century stand for Hull's second wicket but the visitors' total of 207-8 was overhauled in 46.1 overs. Simon Widdup's 107 came off 126 balls and contained 15 fours and a six.

Scarborough marked their first home game by making it four wins out of four, Andrew Simpson amassing 175 off 138 balls and hitting 26 fours and a six against Rotherham. Kuwar Bansil had 10 fours in his 61 and the pair put on 134 for the second wicket, Scarborough totalling 322-5. James Finch then took six wickets and Scarborough won by 122 runs.

Yorkshire Academy beat Harrogate at Weetwood. Harrogate mustered 108, off-spinner Gurman Randhawa taking 3-16. After the Academy lost their first wicket, Callum Geldart (69) and Irfan Amjad (29) led their side home.

Castleford cruised to a nine-wicket win against Driffield at Savile Park. Will Hodson took 3-18 in 11 overs as Driffield were restricted to 150-9. Opener Chris Young made an unbeaten 87 for Castleford and David Wainwright carried his bat for 42.

Champions York had Duncan Snell in top form at Doncaster. Snell hammered an unbeaten 151 off 135 balls and hit 18 fours and three sixes. His side set a challenging target of 307-7 and Doncaster initially went for the runs before falling 27 short with seven wickets down.

Alex Gosney led the chase with 88 off 51 balls. He struck five fours and six sixes.

Nick Gaywood (90) and Ed McKenna (56) set up Sheffield Collegiate for a 108-run victory against Appleby Frodingham who denied the hosts an outright win as last-wicket pair David Pickersgill and Kieran Watson batted out 8.3 overs.
