Waddilove Cup Final

BILTON blasted favourites Burley by eight wickets to take the cup for the first time since 2006.

Burley were looking to lift the trophy for the fourth time in six years and Tom Day and Sami Rehman gave them a steady start.

But then Day went for 22 with the score at 39 and they had only added three more when Will Liddle struck to remove Rehman and Nick Brook in three balls.

Ed Brown (51) and Jason Wright (19) steadied things with a sixth wicket stand of 47 and Brown and Richard Brook added 22 for the seventh. But when Brown went, the last three wickets fell with only 14 added, leaving Bilton to chase 140.

Liddle finished with 3-14 as well as taking two catches and earned the man-of-the-match award, while Mustahsan Shah picked up 3-32, with Richard Spittlehouse and Sajad Ali each taking two.

Richard Brook tried seven different bowlers to try to force a breakthrough, but openers Vic Craven and Michael Donnelly made sure there were no anxious moments, each scoring a half century.

Shah rounded things off with an unbeaten 19 as Bilton cruised to an unexpectedly comfortable win in 31.3 overs.

Huddersfield League Sykes Cup

BARKISLAND lifted the cup for the second time in six seasons, beating Premiership leaders Scholes by 14 runs in a thrilling final at Elland.

Chasing Barkisland’s 165-8, Scholes looked handily placed at 109-2 with 20 overs remaining but they collapsed to 151 all out, ending their hopes of a league and cup double. Barkisland spinner Matthew Steers claimed 4-32 from 10 overs.

Barkisland made a shaky start, losing their first three wickets with only 33 on the board, but New Zealander Tim Seifert and Alex Scholefield led a fightback by putting on 95 for the fourth wicket.

Seifert hit one six and five fours in an excellent 58 off 97 balls and Scholefield struck 44 off 81 deliveries.

Scholes’s Tom Chadwick bagged 4-31 from eight overs and Tom Brook 2-29 from 10.

In reply, Scholes slipped to 38-2 when they lost both openers Peter Drysdale and Chadwick, but Joe Carter and Toby Booth put in them in the driving seat with a 71-run partnership in 18 overs.

Carter’s 56 off 73 balls featured 10 boundaries and Brook hit 36 but when they were dismissed in quick succession Scholes lost their way badly.

Steers, who bagged six wickets when Barkisland beat Delph and Dobcross in the 2008 Sykes Cup final, ripped through the middle order.

Scholes were eventually all out in the 46th over after losing their last eight wickets for just 42 runs. Darren Robinson took 3-26 and Chris Williams 2-33.

ECB Yorkshire (Saturday)

ELIOT CALLIS starred as Yorkshire Academy put themselves back in the hunt to retain their title with victory over Sheffield Collegiate as three of the top four – Barnsley, Rotherham and Harrogate – lost.

Simon Guy hit 95 for Collegiate but with Yaaser Imtiaz (5-71) and Nathan Firn (3-46) in form, the visitors were bowled out for 233.

Callis, who hit 21 boundaries in making 164 not out off 151 balls, put on 153 with fellow opener Ben Ainsley (38) and Academy eased home with eight wickets to spare. They remain fifth but only 12 points behind leaders Barnsley, who crashed to defeat by Appleby Frodingham for the second time this season.

A last-wicket stand of 56 between Rob Day (52no) and Jack Forrester took Appleby Frodingham to 176. Barnsley struggled against the accuracy of Kieran Watson (5-37) and Duncan Heath (3-32) and only Steven Nuttall (48) looked comfortable as they were dismissed for 126.

Mark Cummins (49) and Ben Sanderson (40) were the main contributors to Rotherham’s 201 but despite the efforts of Vinnie Ogden (5-60), Harry Warwick (64no) and Alex Willerton (25no) saw Cleethorpes to victory with three wickets in hand.

Chris Finan (57) and Freddie Collins (41) led the way as Castleford chased down Harrogate’s 225-9 with three wickets to spare.

Alex Gosney smashed five fours and seven sixes in a quick-fire, unbeaten 113 as Doncaster raced to 314-6 before Hull were dismissed for 198.

ECB Yorkshire (Sunday)

ZOHAIB AHMED produced a devastating spell of pace bowling to skittle Cleethorpes for just 85 and keep Barnsley at the top of the table.

Cleethorpes looked likely to upset a title contender for the second day in a row when Alex Willerton (4-44) and Alex Osmond (5-48) dismissed the visitors for 139, which was boosted by an unbeaten 38 from No 9 Ali Jahangir.

But Cleethorpes immediately struggled against Ahmed who twice picked up two wickets in three balls on his way to 7-11.

York stayed on Barnsley’s heels with victory over Yorkshire Academy, who set a 213 target, Mosun Hussain scoring 67 and Simon Lambert taking 4-38. The result was never in doubt when Adam Whatley (61) and Chris Booth (64) put on 119.

Rotherham’s title hopes took another blow when their last five batsmen were dismissed for seven runs leaving them five runs short of victory at Driffield.

Ali Asad (69) top scored in the home side’s 249. All looked well for the visitors with Archie Ogden (73) and Patrick Castledon (52) setting the pace but then came the collapse.

Jaco Scholtz (125) and Matthew Rees (50no) starred in Sheffield United’s 253-9. But Doncaster Town’s Felix Odell (62no) and Matthew Head (31no) put on an unbeaten 96 to clinch a four-wicket win.

Alex Rominiw took 6-41 as Appleby Frodingham were restricted to 216. James Sykes (50) and David Wainwright (75no) led Castleford’s successful chase.

David Toft (84no) and Sam Storr (41) shared a 132-run stand as Thornes overhauled Townville’s 203-8 that included half-centuries by Nick Bresnan and Chris Holliday.

Thornes are five points adrift of leaders Methley, who won by five wickets at lowly Buttershaw St Paul’s thanks to a 141-run partnership between Harry Anderson (111) and Luke Patel (69).

Gary Wainwright (77) and Adam Wainwright (59) led Buttershaw’s scoring.

South African opener Darryl Hendricks, the Premiership’s leading scorer, took his tally to 878 runs as Wrenthorpe kept alive their title hopes by beating Birstall by eight wickets.

Hendricks smashed an unbeaten 83 off 65 balls and put on 112 with all-rounder Greg Wood, who struck 70 and claimed 3-43.

Christian Slinger’s unbeaten 47 was in vain as Hunslet Nelson were routed for 102 by Ossett’s Richard Pyrah (5-35), Charles Orme (2-15) and Gurman Randhawa (2-18) who set up a five-wicket win.

JCT 600 Bradford

LEADERS Pudsey St Lawrence defeated arch-rivals Pudsey Congs by seven wickets but their lead in Division One was cut to 10 points with four games to play after second-placed Woodlands collected a maximum 20 points for their 69-run win at Farsley.

With fellow title-chasers Cleckheaton beating East Bierley by eight wickets and Hanging Heaton defeating Bradford & Bingley by nine runs, just 18 points covers the top four.

Former county left-armer Paul Hutchison took 3-41 as Congs were restricted to 204-9 and Richie Lamb, playing against his old club, picked up 3-38. Andrew Bairstow (49) and Callum Geldart (45) were top scorers for Congs.

St Lawrence paced their reply well and reached their target with 8.1 overs to spare, Mark Robertshaw making an unbeaten 86 and Chris Marsden 67.

Robertshaw has scored 784 runs this season but the man who leading the race to be the first to 1,000 runs in Division One is Cleckheaton’s Tim Jackson.

The left-handed opener took his tally to 831 with an unbeaten 77 as his side brushed aside faltering East Bierley.

Jackson and Ian Nicholson (40no) capitalised on the good work of young paceman Curtis Free (4-26) and leg-spinner Tanzeel Altaf (3-46) as East Bierley were knocked over for 141.

Logan Weston made 120 as Woodlands recovered from an uncertain start to make 296-7 at second-bottom Farsley.

He shared a fourth-wicket stand of 108 with Grant Soames (60) and Pieter Swanepoel hit an unbeaten 44. Jack Holland (65) and Greg Pickles (57) helped Farsley to 227 as spin twins, Soames (5-58) and Chris Brice (4-89), impressed.

Lightcliffe’s Suleman Khan blasted 10 sixes and 19 fours in his 184 in the win against Saltaire.

Half-centuries by John Greaves and Dominic Finn helped Broad Oak overhaul third-placed Shepley’s 214 with two balls remaining.

Gary Bradley (69no) and Christian Smith (62) led Shepley’s scoring.

Broad Oak moved 11 points clear of second-bottom Moorlands, who lost by 10 wickets at title favourites Scholes.

New Zealander Jono Boult (6-42) toppled Moorlands for 116, despite Andrew Fortis’s 68, and openers Peter Drysdale (53no) and Tom Chadwick (44no) knocked off the runs in 19 overs.

Championship pacesetters Cawthorne retained a 10-point lead over closest rivals Armitage Bridge with a five-wicket win at Marsden.

Ben Bailey South Yorkshire

IT is all change again at the top after defeat for Treeton enabled Aston to take the lead with Whitley Hall hot on both their heels.

Hallam, who beat their rivals Whitley Hall last month to let Treeton in, upset the applecart again on Saturday and beat Treeton.

Hide Ad
Hide Ad

Hallam’s Mark Williams came good with a century, as they scored 224-5 to overhaul Treeton’s 222 all out.

Aston Hall moved up, with another tremendous performance by their top five.

They have not lost more than three wickets in an innings since July 11. This time they reached 214-3 to beat Elsecar’s 211-4.

Whitley Hall seem to have straightened out their own wobbles and are now playing with their early-season authority, bowling out Houghton Main for 150 and knocking them off for three down.

Hide Ad
Hide Ad

Darfield’s demise continues. They were top of the table in May but are now fourth from bottom.

They can score runs and they made 227 on Saturday but, with the exception of Michael Topp, they have not quite got the fire power to bowl out their opposition, Conisbrough moving to victory on 228-7.

Tickhill, also in the leading pack early on, have had their own inconsistencies, but are still fifth after scoring 226-6 against Wath, and bowling them out for 128.

Wickersley, having a similar season, are fourth but 14 points behind third after failing to dismiss Coal Aston, whose 152-9 was overhauled for the loss of six wickets.

Hide Ad
Hide Ad

So Aston Hall are top with 77, Treeton second with 76 and Whitley Hall third with 75. In the next two weeks, Aston Hall play Whitley at home, then Treeton away. They should be great games to watch in what is turning out to be a fascinating season.

Aire-Wharfe

VETERAN Babar Butt took 6-40 to fan a flicker of hope that third-placed Kirkstall might grab the title with a victory that consigned Guiseley to a place in the relegation zone.

Andy Siddall (57), Stephen Brown (63) and Tom Webb (71) led the way as Kirkstall raced to 299-7.

Stewart Smith hit a half-century in the reply and there were useful contributions from Jamie Davey (33) and Peter Towner (33) but Butt ensured the visitors were dismissed for 193.

Hide Ad
Hide Ad

It would still take a major collapse by the top two for Kirkstall to challenge and neither Otley nor Beckwithshaw gave any indication they mean to allow a third party into their duel.

Ross Sedgley (82) and Yasar Ali, who followed up a knock of 31 with 5-34, starred as Beckwithshaw ripped out Bilton for 136 in reply to 211-8.

That earned them three more bonus points than Otley earned in beating Burley by six wickets and reduced the gap at the top to 12.

Sam Blake (5-21) was the main destroyer as Burley struggled to 127 and Josh Atkinson (45no) and James Davies (47) ensured the win after an early wobble.

Stephen James produced a match-winning display as Collingham sent Follifoot back to the bottom. He took 4-46 and with Toby Jacklin (4-58) restricted the visitors to 168 and then came in at No 8 to clinch victory with an unbeaten 59.

George Myers (115) and Andrew Duckworth (57) put on 118 in Rawdon’s 252-9 with Farhan Khan and Larry Audain each taking four wickets. North Leeds put up a spirited reply with Rob Winter making 49 and Khan smashing 91 in 77 balls but they went down by eight runs.

Rob Spivey followed up a five-wicket haul with a top scoring 81 as Ilkley overcame Steeton.

York Senior

FOUR of the top six went head to head and Sheriff Hutton Bridge still lead despite being held to a draw after second-placed Acomb suffered a first defeat in over two months.

Hide Ad
Hide Ad

Scarborough brought to an end their hosts’ 10-match unbeaten run, their victory by two wickets at Acomb accomplished with just a couple of balls to spare.

A half-century from James Fletcher (56) and 46 from captain Andy Tute led the home side to 192-9, Ryan Gibson claiming 3-53. The Yorkshire all-rounder was one four batsmen to pass 30, Neil Elvidge the best with 43 as, despite 3-40 from Mark Bell, the visitors sealed victory in a thrilling climax.

Dunnington claimed the best of the draw at the leaders. Adam Sutcliffe (68) and Daniel Barrett (40) laid the foundations before an unbeaten half-century from Harwood Williams (56no) saw them post 234-6. The home side looked to be in trouble as Jake Murphy (3-65) and Dave Brent (3-58) reduced them to 95-5 but Robert Pinder held things together remaining unbeaten on 78 as the Bridge closed on 215-8.

Woodhouse Grange are up to third after a 10-wicket victory over bottom side York. Tom Quinn (5-26) and Christopher Suddaby (3-20) dismissed the hosts for 84, and it took captain Andrew Bilton and Nick Hadfield less than 20 overs to reach the target both finishing on 40.

Stamford Bridge slipped two places to fifth as they were forced to bat out for a draw against Beverley, closing with nine wickets down.
