Baldwin spins in as Moor beat the rain

Rain again caused severe disruption with 11 of the 12 first team matches being abandoned before they could reach a positive conclusion.

The exception was the Division Two encounter at Hartshead Moor where the home side defeated Idle by eight wickets.

Teenage spinner Jack Baldwin took 4-31 and Martin Riley 3-19 as Idle were bowled out for 144. Opener Graham Hilton (49no) and Craig Field (31no) sped them to their victory target.

Division Two leaders Yeadon were saved by the rain. Their unbeaten record looked set to go as they were bowled out by promotion rivals Morley for 80.

Opening bowler Nathan Bromby (5-18) ripped through the top order before left-arm spinner Kashif Naveed chipped in with (3-20), But play was washed out before Morley could reply.

The weather also halted third-placed East Bierley’s push for victory in the day’s top Division One game away to Pudsey St Lawrence, who are second.

St Lawrence were struggling at 53-3 in reply to East Bierley’s impressive 252-6 when play ended.

Former Yorkshire player Gavin Hamilton (68), Andrew Rennison (68) and captain Lee Goddard (33) led the way for Bierley. Former Nottinghamshire all-rounder Gareth Clough (3-52) was the pick of the bowlers.

Only 16.2 overs were possible in Woodlands’s encounter at Wagon Lane where fourth-placed Bradford & Bingley had reached 69-2. Woodlands still lead the table although their advantage was cut to 26 points over St Lawrence with East Bierley a further three adrift.

Captain Ian Philliskirk made 63 and Barrie Frankland (45) as Farsley reached 203-9dec in 49 overs against Manningham Mills. Matthew Lumb (4-15) had Mills in trouble at 44-4 when play was abandoned.

Pudsey Congs remain in the bottom two despite picking up 10 points at Cleckheaton. Opener Nick Lindley (66) and former Cleckheaton all-rounder Eddie Walmsley (50) helped them to 226-7 and maximum batting points. Yorkshire’s Iain Wardlaw took 3-67 for Cleckheaton who were 24-0 when the rain came.

Just a handful of matches were able to be fought to a finish, with only two of those in the Premier Division, on another day cursed by the weather.

Whitley Hall had the points in the bag before rain had a chance to halt their game against hosts Darfield.

The top-section strugglers were skittled for just 48 by South African all-rounder Jaco Castle, who captured 6-10 in just eight overs.

Team-mate Adam Wilson weighed in with two cheap wickets and Whitley raced to victory at 49-2, Neil Longhurst making 23.

The only other match completed in the Premier section resulted in a six-wicket victory for Aston Hall.

Visitors Barnsley were sent back for 84, Asadullah Butt and Ryan Tingle each claiming five victims before Aston claimed a maximum points haul by moving to victory at 85-4.

Rockingham picked up useful points in the only game played in Division One.

They triumphed at Tickhill as Richard Skipworth captured 5-83 and Love Kesh returned 3-29 and also made 46.

Doncaster Town were 10-wicket winners in Division Two, after sending back Aston Hall B for 71, thanks largely through the efforts of Chris Silvester, who captured 5-38.

Though Hallam B only made 125-9, they struck back against Millhouses, who were toppled for 99, the wickets being shared between Iain Snelling and James Smedley.

Further down the league, in Division Four, promising Barnsley youngster Tom Goldsby-West hit the only century of the day.

His classy 103 for the Shaw Lane side, which included nine fours and four sixes, came in their 184-7 against Collegiate, who were all out for 104 despite an unbeaten 59 from lower order batsman Neil Priestley as Perry Youel grabbed 5-28.

UNBEATEN Wrenthorpe retained top spot in the Premier Division with a four-wicket win at Altofts.

Opener Eric Austin hit 64 off 52 balls to steer champions Wrenthorpe to victory after Greig Batty and Joe Ellis each claimed 4-39 to topple Altofts for 132.

Wrenthorpe are three points clear of New Farnley, who trounced Hunslet Nelson by 169 runs.

Benny Howell (104no), Montcin Hodge (51) and Joe Suggit (40) guided Farnley to 246-5 and David McCallum (4-11) and Howell (4-20) skittled Hunslet for 77.

Townville maintained their challenge when Jonathan Booth (73) led them to an eight-wicket victory at Birstall, who were bowled out for 146 by Ritchie Bresnan (4-35) – younger brother of Yorkshire and England star Tim – Dean Woolsey (3-38) and Wade Lezar (2-28).

Methley were foiled by rain when they were in a strong position at Mirfield Parish Cavaliers.

Chris Holliday (120no) and Nick Connolly (118) put on 207 for the second wicket as Methley reached 259-3 before declaring after 46.1 overs. In reply, Cavaliers were 83-5 from 37.3 overs when the game was abandoned.

Batley climbed off the foot of the table by beating fellow strugglers Wakefield Thornes by two runs.

Fawad Maqsood (57) and Mohammed Bashir (44) shared a 111-run stand as Batley posted 213-9.

In reply, Thornes were all out for 211 with one ball remaining when last man Derek Colquhoun was run out by Ayaz Seedat.

Division One leaders Moorlands, who are joining the Huddersfield League next season, beat East Ardsley by 139 runs.

Jake Alleston (26) was the only batsman who reached double figures as Steve Lane (6-12) and Andy Walker (3-13) routed Ardsley for 73, replying to Moorlands’ 212-7 that included an unbeaten 46 by Adam Roberts.

Shoaib Latif’s 10-28 was in vain for Ossett, who lost top spot with a 30-run defeat at Methley A.

Wakefield St Michael’s revived their promotion bid when John Bowett (43no) and Alex Leyshon (43no) led them to a seven-wicket win against Hopton Mills, for whom Andy Moorhouse struck an unbeaten half-century.
