Ballance in century double as Yorkshire match ends in draw

Ballance, who needed 106 balls for his fifty, hit 15 fours and two sixes on his way to an undefeated 108 in 160 deliveries to become the 13th batsman to score hundreds in both innings for Yorkshire, and the first since Younus Khan in 2007.

Resuming on 572 for four, Surrey compiled their highest total for seven years - 634 for five declared, with Dominic Sibley making 242.

In the fifth over of the day, Sibley was yorked by Sidebottom, though not before he had lifted Adil Rashid back over his head for six on his way to breaking another Surrey record; that of the highest maiden century, held previously by Kevin Pietersen, who made 234 not out for Surrey against Lancashire at Guildford last year.

Sibley, who received a pat on the back from Yorkshire’s captain Andrew Gale and walked off to a standing ovation, batted for 10 hours and faced 536 deliveries in all, hitting 24 fours and two sixes.

Only two batsmen younger than Sibley have ever scored more runs in a first-class innings - Javed Miandad who made 311 for Karachi Whites against National Bank of Pakistan in 1975, when he was 17 years and 313 days, and Umar Akmal who hit 248 for Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited against Karachi Blues in 2007 at the age of 17 years and 197 days.

Having put on 94 in 21 overs for the fifth wicket with the 18-year-old, Steven Davies helped add a further 38 at more than a run a ball with Gary Wilson to finish with an unbeaten 46 as Rashid registered the most expensive analysis by a Yorkshire bowler in first-class cricket, two for 227 off 55 overs.

Faced with a first-innings deficit of 200, the visitors slipped to 21 for three.

Adam Lyth presented Vikram Solanki with a chest-high catch at second slip, having just driven Tim Linley sweetly through cover for four. Five overs later, Phil Jaques drove lavishly at Matthew Dunn only to get a thick inside edge on to his stumps, and Alex Lees was caught behind for 11 when Linley got the ball to lift and leave him.

Jonny Bairstow flayed Tom Jewell for four successive boundaries just before lunch - two through the on-side followed by one that raced to the long-off boundary and another cut through backward point.

After the break, Kane Williamson clipped two consecutive leg-side fours off Linley, who hit back by trapping Bairstow lbw for 35 to make it 84 for four.

Williamson moved to a 57-ball half-century with cut four off Zafar Ansari, but was caught at slip off the shoulder of the bat for 60.

At tea, Yorkshire trailed Surrey by 30 with five wickets remaining. Gale was caught at leg slip off Ansari for 13, but Ballance and Rashid (8no) combined to make the game safe.

Second-placed Yorkshire took seven points back to Headingley while Surrey signed off for the season with eight points.
