Ballance is ready for challenge with Rhinos

YORKSHIRE batsman Gary Ballance will tomorrow turn his hand to Twenty20 matters at the start of Zimbabwe’s domestic tournament.

Ballance is set to play in the opening game of the Stanbic Bank 20 competition for MidWest Rhinos against the Mountaineers at Harare Sports Club.

The batsman, who turned 22 on Tuesday, has performed creditably for Yorkshire in Twenty20 games.

MidWest Rhinos team – coached by Yorkshire’s new first-team coach Jason Gillespie – are one of five franchises taking part in the event, with Mashonaland Eagles, Matabeleland Tuskers and Southern Rocks making up the numbers.

A number of county cricketers are involved in the tournament, which concludes with a final on December 4.

Among them are former England wicketkeeper Phil Mustard, who has joined Leicestershire’s Ned Eckersley at the Mountaineers.

Essex wicketkeeper Adam Wheater and Lancashire’s Tom Smith will play for Matabeleland under the captaincy of Red Rose opener Paul Horton, while Riki Wessels, who played for Notts last season, will be a team-mate of Ballance’s at the Rhinos.
