‘Brilliant’ Starc set for Yorkshire debut as he gets to grips with his new surroundings

Moxon predicted that Starc, who will play in the CB40 game against Derbyshire at Headingley, would significantly strengthen the Yorkshire side.

The director of cricket added that the 22-year-old was fully recovered from his recent trips to and from Australia, with Starc having been forced to fly home due to problems with his visa.

Starc was deported owing to incorrect paperwork but returned to England earlier this week.

After being left out of the current County Championship game against Hampshire to recover from his flights, Starc has been steadily increasing his training.

He has been practising with the Dukes ball and working on his fitness, as well as getting to know his new county team-mates.

After running the rule over the player at Weetwood yesterday, Moxon said he was delighted with what he had seen. He forecast Starc could be a key performer.

“I think that Mitchell is going to be a serious acquisition for us,” said Moxon. “He bowls 90mph and swings it as well, and, from what I’ve seen, he’s no mug with the bat. He had a good practice at Weetwood, a decent bat and bowl, and now we’re looking forward to seeing him in a Yorkshire shirt. Mitchell has been brilliant since he arrived at the club, and, even through all the problems he’s faced, he’s kept his sense of humour and just got on with the situation.”

Yorkshire will hope Starc provides the inspiration as they look to get their CB40 campaign up-and-running at the second attempt. They lost their opening match by four wickets against Kent at Headingley after slipping to 22-4 after winning the toss.

“Mitchell is a tremendous bowler, but, at the same time, we shouldn’t expect too much too soon,” added Moxon. “It’s been a while since he played so we can’t expect miracles. It will understandably take him a bit of time to settle in, and, once he does, I’m sure he’ll do well. We’re really excited about having him here and looking forward to seeing him perform.”
