Century for Lyth as Yorkshire go into bat against Somerset

ADAM LYTH scored his first century of the season as Yorkshire reached 218-3 at tea in their County Championship match against Somerset at Taunton.

The left-hander made 105 from 158 balls with 15 fours as Yorkshire continued to pile up the runs.

After the visitors resumed on 110-2 after lunch, Lyth carried on from where he left off in the morning with a number of handsome drives and shots down the ground.

The 25-year-old reached his century with a delightful cover-driven four off the left-arm spinner George Dockrell to the foot of the Marcus Trescothick Stand.

Lyth fell with the total on 185 in the 52nd over when he pulled a ball from Gemaal Hussain to Peter Trego at mid-on.

Lyth added 103 in 32 overs with captain Andrew Gale, who is unbeaten on 50 at the break - his first Championship haf-century of the summer.

Gary Balllance (25) is the other not out batsman as Yorkshire built a healthy position.

Yorkshire began poorly when Lyth’s opening partner Joe Sayers fell to the eighth ball of the day.

Sayers was undone by a good one from Steve Kirby that climbed to find the outside edge, Marcus Trescothick doing the rest at second slip as Sayers departed for a single.

Lyth and Phil Jaques added 80 for the second wicket before Jaques was undone by a beauty from Gemaal Hussain.

Jaques had made 26 when the bowler located his outside edge, wicketkeeper Alex Barrow taking an excellent catch, diving to his left.

Lyth had a life on 37 when he was dropped by Dean Elgar at third slip off Kirby.

It was a difficult chance as the South African debutant dived to his left, and one that Somerset may live to regret.

Yorkshire have recalled pace bowler Moin Ashraf in place of the injured Liam Plunkett, with 19-year-old Academy player Ben Coad named 12th man.

Somerset: Trescothick, Suppiah, Elgar, Hildreth, Barrow, Trego, Meschede, Hildreth, Dockrell, Kirby, Hussain.
