Champions tied up – Academy crushed

champions York salvaged a tie in a thrilling finish at Driffield, who finished fourth from bottom last season.

Driffield were 6-3 before Danny Broumpton sprang to the rescue with 109, including 14 fours and five sixes. Will Norman also played his part with 27. Jake Murphy, back after a season in the York League, grabbed 6-47 runs and Town were dismissed for 204.

Alex Collins made a half-century in the reply and York needed 13 off the last over. With the scores level, York failed to score off the last ball.

Darren Harland has stepped down as Scarborough’s captain after nine years in the role but he and fellow opener Andrew Simpson helped themselves to centuries as Yorkshire Academy were crushed by 10 wickets.

Harland made exactly 100, including 13 fours off 145 balls, while Simpson struck 21 boundaries off 117 deliveries. Alex Lees contributed 74 runs towards the Academy’s 216-8 and teenager Jack Holt took the bowling honours with a 4-41 return.

Ryan Bradshaw played a captain’s innings in Harrogate’s six-wicket victory over Doncaster at St George’s Road. Dan Craven, Sam Biker and Vic Craven took three wickets each as Town were restricted to 182-9. Then Bradshaw, batting at No 4, fashioned an unbeaten 83 including 11 fours and four sixes.

Opening batsman Bill Kirby and medium pace bowler Andy Ellis saw Cleethorpes to a six-wicket home success against Appleby Frodingham, whose captain, Matt Morland, was their top scorer with 27. The visitors were dismissed for 143 in 46.4 overs, Ellis taking 5-52 in 20 overs, including seven maidens. Kirby then made 66, including 11 fours, and Alex Osman was unbeaten on 23 when the target was reached in 43.2 overs.

Castleford were indebted to Dominic Sharp and Andy Bourke, their No 6 and 7 batsmen, respectively, in a four-wicket win against visitors Hull. Sharp made a half-century and Bourke an undefeated 27 to overhaul Hull’s 178.

Sheffield United won the derby at Collegiate by three wickets, Paul Cummins taking four wickets and making 30 for United.
