Chandimal steers Sri Lanka to success

Having set Sri Lanka a 269-run target for victory, India also needed to restrict the Lions to 214, in order to ensure the bonus point required to have a chance of qualifying for the tournament's final.

However, Sri Lanka crossed the finish line emphatically with a boundary and 10 balls to spare to eliminate their opponents from the competition.

Captain Tillakaratne Dilshan (21) started the run chase in style, smashing debutant Pankaj Singh and Ashok Dinda for boundaries with ease, before being caught by Yusuf Pathan off Dinda's bowling.

However, Sri Lanka powered on through Upul Tharanga and Chandimal, with both batsmen helping themselves to boundaries and sixes aplenty off some lacklustre Indian bowling and fielding. Tharanga finally fell in the 15th over to debutant spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, caught at slip by Virat Kohli.

Chandimal continued the Sri Lanka drive, smashing Ashwin for a 90-metre six in the 21st over to bring up his maiden ODI half-century, while at the other end Chamara Kapugedera provided some lusty strokes of his own. Chandimal reached his hundred in almost the same fashion as his 50, charging down the track to smash the ball over the head of spinner Ravindra Jadeja for four.

Kapugedera fell eight short of his sixth one-day half century, caught at deep extra cover in the 37th over, while Chandimal departed on 111 three overs later to a tame stumping.

But the damage had already been done, with Jeevan Mendis (35) and Thilan Samaraweera (28) knocking off the remainder of the runs to confirm India's exit from the tournament.

Earlier in the day, India turned in an improved batting performance after Thursday's display against Zimbabwe – but they were undone by the loss of wickets at key stages.

Sent in to bat after losing the toss, India's opening combination woes were further compounded as Naman Ojha was trapped lbw by paceman Nuwan Kulasekara in only the third over. Fellow opener Dinesh Karthik and Virat Kohli were able to keep the run rate above the four mark, the former grabbing five boundaries for his patient 27 before being caught and bowled off Thissara Perera.

Pathan took full advantage of the batting powerplay in the 19th over, smashing Perera for three boundaries, but was caught on 44, ending an 84-run third-wicket partnership.

Kohli (68) succumbed to temptation in a rush to up the scoring rate, and lofted an easy catch to long-off.

And after captain Suresh Raina (19) fell to a brilliant catch from Kapugedera, it was left to Ashwin and Jadeja to deliver several huge hits at the end.
