In his other role as the spin coach of England’s Performance Programme, Dawson heads out to the United Arab Emirates later this week to work with the Under-19s ahead of their World Cup campaign which begins on February 14.

Dawson takes up his new role with Yorkshire on April 1 and will be immediately thrust into action, with the White Rose county starting their warm-up match against Leeds/Bradford MCCU that day.

The Doncaster-born offbreak bowler spent six seasons at Headingley as a player between 2001 and 2006.

He helped Yorkshire win the County Championship in 2001 and the Cheltenham and Gloucester One-Day Trophy a year later.

Dawson played 72 first-class matches for the White Rose County, taking 157 wickets.

He played seven Tests for England, debuting against India in Mohali in December 2001, taking 4-16 in the match.

A year later he played in four Ashes Test matches Down Under, adding another five wickets to his tally.

He said: “I am delighted to be working for Yorkshire.

“I enjoyed six years as a player at Headingley and had some great times including winning a couple of trophies.

“To have the opportunity to return and be part of the coaching staff is a real honour and a fresh challenge that I’m relishing.

“Yorkshire have a number of exciting prospects coming through and to be part of their development over the next few years will be a major part of my role.

“This is a club that is heading in the right direction and I look forward to working alongside Martyn Moxon, Jason Gillespie, the players and the rest of the coaching set-up.

“I would like to thank John Bracewell at Gloucestershire for giving me an opportunity to develop as a coach. To spend time as the limited overs coach over the past couple of seasons has been massive in my coaching education and I hope I can take that into my role with Yorkshire.

“The biggest challenge will be to settle into a new environment and a new dynamic. It certainly helps that I know the coaches having played alongside Dizzy and being coached by Martyn and Ian (Dews).

“I just can’t wait to get started and be part of a club that has a burning ambition of being very successful in all forms of the game.”

Yorkshire’s director of professional cricket Martyn Moxon said: “Richard has been successful so far in his coaching career.

“He greatly impressed on interview and is highly thought of throughout the game. He will bring an understanding of what is required to become a Yorkshire cricketer.

“He will be a great asset in developing our players at all levels.”
