Congs and Farsley off the mark at last

Pudsey Congs slipped to the bottom of Division One despite registering their first win of the season against unbeaten Manningham Mills.

Their delight at recording a four-wicket win was tempered when Farsley secured their first victory and picked up three more bonus points for defeating Cleckheaton by seven wickets.

Congs dismissed Mills for 144, of which Gulsheraz Ahmed made 40, and eased to their target thanks to Nick Lindley (46), and Eugene Burzler (37).

Haroon Rashid, elder brother of Yorkshire’s Adil, stroked an unbeaten 95 as Farsley overhauled Cleckheaton’s 251-9. Richard Whitehurst (96) and Ammer Mahmood (94) shared a fourth-wicket stand of 164 for Cleckheaton after coming together at 16-3.

Another sibling of a Yorkshire player provided some fireworks at Pudsey St Lawrence. Nick Bresnan, brother of Tim, smashed 71 off just 32 balls but it wasn’t enough to save Hanging Heaton from a 16-run defeat.

Bresnan shared a ninth-wicket stand with Umar Rehman as Hanging Heaton made 296-9 in reply to St Lawrence’s 312-4. Skipper Mark Robertshaw led the way for Saints with a patient 100 while James Smith hit a rapid 84.
