Congs serve intent against title chasers

Champions Pudsey Congs gave notice that they are not going to give up their title without a fight after ending Woodlands nine-match unbeaten run.

Congs’ 48-run victory was their second over the league leaders this season and moved them into fourth place – just 21 points adrift of Woodlands.

Left-arm spinner Glenn Roberts took 6-41 as Woodlands were restricted to 153-9 in reply to a Congs score of 210-8. Andrew Bairstow (47), Babar Butt (46) and Roberts (34no) made crucial contributions for Congs.

The defeat has reduced Woodlands’ lead to just 13 points over Cleckheaton who are second after beating Pudsey St Lawrence by 14 runs.

Left-arm spinner Mark Cummins took 5-18 as St Lawrence collapsed from 180-3 to 246 all out despite a magnificent 114 from opener Adam Waite. He struck three sixes and 13 fours and gained support from David Hester (41) and Chris Marsden (33) before St Lawrence faltered.

Former Lancashire and Durham player John Wood (97) dominated an opening stand of 108 for Cleckheaton with Cummins (38) as he smashed four sixes and 12 fours. James Lee hit a rapid 54.

There was no joy for the bottom two, Baildon and Gomersal. Undercliffe’s Callum Geldart made 110 as his side defeated Baildon by 158 runs. Geldart shared an opening stand of 162 with Matthew Bottomley (65) as Undercliffe made 262-8. Baildon were dismissed for 104. East Bierley’s pace bowlers Muhammad Azhar Ullah (4-21) and Mitch Claydon (3-21) sent bottom-team Gomersal crashing to a six-wicket defeat.

Manningham Mills’ overseas player Imran Khalid took a stunning 8-36 as they defeated Hanging Heaton by two wickets. Opener Rob McFarlane (49) was top scorer for Heaton, while Mills needed 58 not out from Masood Ahmed to edge home.

Farsley slipped from second to third after losing at Bradford & Bingley by 14 runs. Richard McCarthy (4-43) and Chris Thompson (3-46) helped dismiss the visitors for 213 despite the Ian Philliskirk’s 69.

Phil Slater (83) was Bradford & Bingley’s top scorer.
