CRICKET LATEST: Bresnan falls before rain strikes

SHOWERS forced an early lunch on the second day of Yorkshire’s County Championship match against Hampshire at Headingley Carnegie.

The players left the field at 12.40pm - the second short interruption to the proceeedings so far.

In the 22.5 overs bowled today, Yorkshire lifted their first innings total from 304-7 to 343-9.

Tim Bresnan added only five runs to his overnight 82 before he was eighth out with the total on 313, caught behind driving at a ball from Kabir Ali.

It ended a splendid stand of 108 in 43 overs between Bresnan and Ajmal Shahzad, which helped rescue Yorkshire after they slipped to 99-5 on the opening day.

Only 13 runs came in the first hour today as Yorkshire sought to eke out as many runs as possible against some generally impressive Hampshire bowling.

Shahzad - 42 overnight - perished two runs short of his half-century when he was caught low down at second slip by Liam Dawson off Dominic Cork, giving the former England pace bowler his fourth wicket of the innings.

At lunch, Ryan Sidebottom is unbeaten on 21 and Steve Patterson undefeated on two and the ground is now bathed in glorious sunshine.
