Cricket latest: Yorkshire chasing monster Sussex total

YORKSHIRE need 399 to avoid the follow-on after Sussex declared on 548-4 on the second day at Hove.

The home side surprisingly pulled the plug half-an-hour before tea, with Murray Goodwin unbeaten on 274 and Andy Hodd undefeated on 32.

Sussex might have been tempted to rub Yorkshire’s noses in it and bat them out of the game completely.

But they gave themselves seven overs at Yorkshire before the break, the visitors reaching 17-0 with Joe Root and Joe Sayers both on five.

It has been another sobering day for Andrew Gale’s men, who claimed only two more wickets after Sussex resumed on 295-2.

Both of those were to run-outs, Sussex captain Michael Yardy falling for 16 shortly after the lunch break when he pushed a ball from Oliver Hannon-Dalby back down the pitch, thought about a run and was then beaten in his bid to regain his ground when Hannon-Dalby kicked the ball on to the stumps in his follow-through.

Goodwin was in imperious mood and doled out savage treatment to Adil Rashid, who conceded 187 from 35.4 wicket-less overs.

Ajmal Shahzad also conceded three figures - 1-145 from 31 overs - as Yorkshire’s bowlers were put to the sword.
