Cricket latest: Yorkshire claw back Glamorgan’s total

YORKSHIRE are 133-2 at lunch on the second day of their County Championship match against Glamorgan at Headingley Carnegie.

Adam Lyth has 67 and Andrew Gale (26) as Yorkshire trail by 139 on first innings.

The home team started the day on 20-0 and lost their first wicket after 20 minutes’ play when Joe Root was lbw to Graham Wagg for 14.

The ball seemed to keep a little low on Root, who was today named the winner of the inaugural County Championship Breakthrough Player Award, beating county colleague Gary Ballance and Lancashire’s Simon Kerrigan, Surrey’s Stuart Meaker, Derbyshire’s Dan Redfern and Kent’s Matt Coles.

Root’s departure with the total on 39 was followed by that of Phil Jaques on 70, who shouldered arms to a delivery from Jim Allenby that also appeared to keep a touch low and which trapped him lbw.

Jaques made 13 runs in 50 minutes and it is not the first time the Australian left-hander has been out in that sort of fashion this season.

Yorkshire captain Gale arrived to inject some much-needed impetus, while Lyth has continued his splendid form of late with a combination of solid defence and attractive strokeplay.
