Cricket latest: Yorkshire save the follow-on against Hampshire

ANTHONY MCGRATH and Ryan Sidebottom helped Yorkshire save the follow-on in their County Championship match against Hampshire at Headingley Carnegie.

McGrath (57) and Sidebottom (29) lifted Yorkshire from 237-7 - still 41 shy of the follow-on - to 316-7 at tea on day three.

It was a splendid performance by the eighth wicket pair as Yorkshire continue their response to Hampshire’s first innings 427.

After resuming on 206-5 after lunch, Yorkshire fell to 232-6 when Gerard Brophy mis-timed a drive off spinner Liam Dawson and was caught at mid-on by Chris Wood for 22.

Adil Rashid was bowled for three by a fine delivery from David Balcombe, at which point Yorkshire were in danger of being asked to bat again.

But McGrath and Sidebottom averted that prospect, combining sensible strokeplay with solid defence to save their side from immediate danger.
