Cricket latest: Yorkshire turn the tide to raise prospect of a draw at Sussex

YORKSHIRE are on course to save their County Championship match against Sussex at Hove.

The visitors are 261-5 at tea on day four, requiring a further 14 runs to make the home side bat again.

Gary Ballance is unbeaten on 33 and Adil Rashid undefeated on 26.

Yorkshire lost only one wicket during the afternoon session after resuming on 118-4 after lunch, Jonny Bairstow falling for 76.

Bairstow played a fine hand, reaching his half-century from 59 deliveries with 11 fours and taking a particular liking to Monty Panesar, whom he struck for three fours and a swept six in an over that also contained two wides.

But the left-arm spinner had his revenge when Bairstow was caught by Kirk Wernars running in from deep square-leg after top-edging another sweep shot.

Ballance has batted in obdurate fashion, while Rashid has kept him company in determined style.

The only cloud on Yorkshire’s horizon is the second new-ball, which will be available two overs after tea.
