Cummins denied as Doncaster celebrate

DONCASTER Town celebrated their first victory since last August despite the considerable efforts of Sheffield United all-rounder Paul Cummins.

In a match reduced by the weather to 48 overs, Doncaster were bowled out for 162 in 47.2 overs, off-spinning brothers Paul and Mark Cummins taking four wickets each. James Dobson was Doncaster’s best with 38. Paul Cummins opened the Sheffield innings and made 66 but his side were 26 runs short with their last pair at the wicket.

Rotherham made it eight successive wins in league and cup since losing to Barnsley in May as they overcame visitors Appleby Frodingham by eight wickets. Spinner Oliver Jackson took 6-34 from 15.5 overs, including five maidens, and the opposition were bowled out for 125 in 51.5 overs despite a defiant 84 from opener Duncan Heath, who hit nine fours and a six.

Next highest scorer was No 3 Tony Manning, who mustered = seven, and there were 17 extras. Rotherham had no trouble reaching their target in 30.5 overs, Stuart Guy striking six fours and a six in an unbeaten half-century off 57 balls and captain James Moorehouse contributing 42.

Unbeaten Harrogate won a rain-affected game against Driffield by 48 runs. David Orange and Grant McCarthy reaped half-centuries for Harrogate, who totalled 164-7 in their 31 overs, Nick Hardgrave taking 4-35 in five. Driffield reached 116-8 in reply, with Vic Craven’s 15 overs bringing him 4-42.

Yorkshire Academy and Barnsley took three points each from an incomplete game at Headingley. Simon Widdup and Steve Nuttall had a second-wicket partnership of 113 for Barnsley, who totalled 215-8 in 55 overs. The Academy replied with 209-8 in 51 overs, captain Jack Leaning making 65 and Barnsley captain Richard Wilkinson taking five wickets.

The game between Cleethorpes and Castleford was abandoned for rain with Cleethorpes on 28-1 in 12 overs replying to Castleford’s 253-8 in their 55 overs – Graham Hume, the South African mediu-quick bowler, having claimed five wickets in 17 overs.

Taylor to the rescue as Carlton scrape in

PROMOTED Carlton eased their Premier Division relegation worries by scraping a one-wicket win over Birstall.

Chasing Birstall’s 123-9 in a 45-over game, Carlton were floundering at 64-8 before Tom Taylor (38no) rescued them by putting on 60 for the last two wickets with Neil Roberts and Jack Rich.

Kevin Watson (5-26), Saif Ur-Rehman (3-26), James Keen (37) and James Deverell (36no) were Birstall’s best performers.

Hunslet Nelson climbed to second when Tom Suggitt (38), Robert Barker (4-36) and Michael Lambert (3-32) led them to a 32-run success at Batley.

Hunslet are four points behind unbeaten leaders Wrenthorpe, whose match at Methley was abandoned.

New Farnley maintained their challenge by beating Townville.

Joe Suggitt (71) and Sam Burge (49no) guided Farnley to 208-7 and David McCallum (5-67) kept Townville’s reply at 168-9 which included 40 by Tim Walton.

Wakefield Thornes’suffered a fifth defeat in six league games against Mirfield Parish Cavaliers.

Tharaka Gunaranthne (85no) and Michael Rounding (82) shared a 147-run stand as Cavaliers overhauled Thornes’ 198-9 with two overs to spare. Nadeera Nawela (43), Richard Foster (40) and Matthew Jordan (39) led Thornes’ scoring.

Hopton Mills and Ossett are the new joint leaders in Division One after Butttershaw St Paul’s lost top spot with a four-wicket defeat against Liversedge.

Paul Carroll struck 70 off 68 balls and shared a sixth-wicket stand of 84 with James Sawyer (50no) as Buttershaw posted 187-8.

Graeme Winn (50no) and Ross Kieswetter (40) put on 88 and Craig Wood hit 41 to steer Liversedge to their first win in four league matches.

Ossett’s Khalid Bilal (5-29) and Richard Pyrah (4-29) routed Scholes for 62 to set up a nine-wicket win.

Sam Gardiner (80) and Chris Scott (72) shared a 160-run stand as Hopton Mills reached 216-5 in 38 overs against Methley who were skittled for 78 by Michael Carroll (5-13).

Deegan is last-ball hero for Cleckheaton

Cleckheaton had to wait five games to gain their first Division One victory – now they have won three in a row, including Saturday’s dramatic one-wicket triumph at Lightcliffe.

They were on the brink of defeat at 98-9 after a fine spell from Yorkshire paceman Moin Ashraf (5-28), when last pair Mally Nicholson and Andrew Deegan came together.

Cleckheaton still needed 40 to overhaul Lightcliffe’s 137-6, but Nicholson, who made an unbeaten 56, and Deegan were undaunted by the task.

They reduced the target to six runs from the final over and still needed two to win when Alex Stead bowled the last ball to Deegan, who got the two needed to grab a victory which had seemed highly improbable at 8-4 and 98-9.

Leaders Woodlands made it seven wins in seven games as they defeated Saltaire by 27 runs in a 42 overs match.

Captain Pieter Swanepoel took 5-43 as Saltaire were restricted to 136-9 in reply to 162-9. Tabbi Bhatt top scored with 49 for Saltaire and Grant Soames (46) and Sam Frankland (38) were the main contributors for Woodlands, who were pegged by Nawaz Sardar (4-44) and Ijaz Khan (4-52).

Farsley scored a surprise 113-run win over Bradford & Bingley at Wagon Lane to haul themselves off the bottom of the table.

Matthew Lumb produced a stunning spell of 6-34 and Chris Henry picked up 4-26 as Bradford & Bingley were all out for 64 in reply to Farsley’s 177 all out.

Andrew Duckworth made a battling 51 for Farsley in the face of some good bowling from Chris Thompson (5-42).

Pudsey Congs, whose game with Hanging Heaton was abandoned after just seven balls, are bottom.

Baildon were the big winners in Division Two as the weather frustrated leaders Yeadon.

Baildon defeated Morley by seven wickets to climb above them into second place. Sohail Raz (4-31) troubled Morley as they struggled to 146, then opener Simon Webb hit a patient 54.

Kanchana Rodrigo hit the day’s only century. He made 123 as Bankfoot reached 261-6 before bowling out Spen Victoria for 179.
