Delph deny holders with repeat show

HEAVY WOOLLEN CUP: Wrenthorpe’s bid to become the first club in the Heavy Woollen Cup’s 128-year history to lift the trophy for a fifth successive year ended with an eight wicket defeat at Delph and Dobcross in the first round.

All-rounder Faisal Butt was outstanding for Delph who were also the last team to previously beat holders Wrenthorpe in the competition in 2006.

Butt bagged 5-24 and Warren Jones snapped up 2-28 as Central Yorkshire League champions Wrenthorpe were routed for 118.

Irfan Zahoor (65no) and Butt (40no) then shared an unbroken century stand as Huddersfield League Delph recovered from 19-2 to knock off the runs in 23 overs.

James Stansfield (42no), Chris Goodair (36), Rob McFarlane (32) and John Carruthers (3-42) steered last season’s beaten finalists Hanging Heaton to a seven-wicket win against Kirkheaton.

Barnsley, who lifted the cup in 2005 and 2006, lost by 55 runs at Spen Victoria.

Craig Woodhead (3-10), Robert Warriner (3-22) and Rob Burton (3-39) toppled Barnsley for 130, replying to Spen’s 185 that included 53 by Joel Pollard.

Tim Orrell (79) and Chris Brice (63) put on 127 as Woodlands recovered from 20-4 to overhaul Methley’s 251-5. Scott Richardson junior hit a winning four off the final ball as Woodlands won by one wicket.

Andy Gleave (83no) and Darren Robinson (68no) shared a match-winning unbroken stand of 126 as Barkisland beat Clayton West by seven wickets.

Tim Walton hammered 158 in Townville’s 190-run victory over Wakefield St Michael’s and Matthew Good (120), Ian Fisher (93no) and Sam Burge (83) guided New Farnley to 357-4 against Buttershaw St Paul’s who replied with 247-8.
