Driffield are first to scalp York in a year

DRIFFIELD TOWN condemned York to their first league defeat for a year, but the Kings Mill Road side had just three runs to spare.

Sam Drury made 80 for Driffield who were dismissed for 235. Oliver Hairs and Jack Leaning then had a second wicket stand of 109 for York but the defending champions were bowled out for the first time this season, Nick Hardgrave (5-56) and Ollie Ezard (4-48) doing the damage.

Harrogate joined York at the top after an incomplete win by 58 runs over Sheffield United. Former Barnsley medium pacer Graeme Wiles took 5-33 for Harrogate, including a hat-trick, and Andy Laws had 3-20 in 13 overs.

Skipper Alex Lees lifted Yorkshire Academy into third place with a swashbuckling 116 as Hull were thrashed by 260 runs. Lees, the 20-year-old left handed batsman, flayed 17 fours and a six off 77 balls and shared a second-wicket partnership of 156 with Mosun Hussain who hit a half-century. The Academy piled up 328-8 before sending Hull back for 68, left-arm spinner Karl Carver taking 3-8 in six overs and seamer Ryan Gibson 3-9 from five.

Cleethorpes captain and off-spinner Alex Osmond claimed 7-12 in 6.5 overs as hosts Sheffield Collegiate were skittled for 57. Cleethorpes won by 130 runs.

Doncaster Town player-coach Simon Widdup gave a fine all-round performance in his side’s 10-wicket trouncing of visitors Castleford. Right-arm spinner Widdup bowled 11 overs and took 5-24 in helping to dismiss Castleford for 152.

Then he and Gareth Cox cruised home, Cox making 91, including 12 boundaries, and Widdup contributing 53.

Rotherham Town lost by seven wickets at Appleby Frodingham. Archie Ogden and Dan Waldron had an eighth wicket stand of 97 but Town were bowled out for 150 in 41 overs, Duncan Heath, Jack Forrester and Justin Dill snatching three wickets each.

Tom Precious and Jack Holt each took 3-23 as Scarborough ousted visitors Barnsley for 136 in 53 overs. Ashley Lyth then led the successful runs chase with an unbeaten 38, Scarborough winning by six wickets.
