Durham Jets v Yorkshire Vikings: Yorkshire end long wait for T20 win on their travels

YORKSHIRE won their first T20 game on the road for almost two years as they completed a quickfire double over Durham.

Having beaten them by 44 runs on opening night at Emerald Headingley, before losing by eight wickets at Birmingham Bears last Sunday, Yorkshire downed the Jets for a second time on a sun-kissed evening at Chester-le-Street, closing out a 10-run triumph.

It was Yorkshire’s first T20 away win since they beat Glamorgan by 90 runs in the quarter-final at Cardiff in August 2016, breaking an eight-match winless streak on their travels.

More importantly it was another step towards qualifying for this year’s knockout stages, an aspiration about to be enhanced by the impending return of their international stars.

After winning the toss Yorkshire scored 157-6 from their 20 overs, a competitive score on a sluggish pitch.

It was an innings that featured no standout contribution as such, apart from that of former England captain Paul Collingwood, who took 3-27 from his four overs.

But Harry Brook (38 off 27 balls), Jonny Tattersall (36 off 26) and Tim Bresnan (28 not out off 15) played well, Tattersall and Bresnan adding 51 in 4.2 overs towards the finish.

Durham, who responded to their recent defeat at Headingley by winning at Leicestershire, started well before a crowd of 7,785, removing Tom Kohler-Cadmore to the final ball of the second over, caught at slip by Collingwood as he threw the kitchen sink at James Weighell.

But Brook, fresh from an unbeaten 101 in a second team T20 match against Derbyshire at Barnsley the previous day, emerged to whack Weighell for three successive fours before lofting Nathan Rimmington for six over long-off.

Rimmington was unlucky when Brook, on 22, was dropped at deep mid-wicket by Graham Clark, which would have left Yorkshire 40-2 in the sixth over, but the second wicket tumbled in the following over when Adam Lyth was caught behind trying to pull Collingwood.

The innings fell away as Yorkshire went from 50-1 in the seventh over to 104-5 in the 16th, only twice finding the boundary during that period.

Brook lofted Collingwood to long-off, Gary Ballance made a mess of an attempted ramp off Collingwood and was caught and bowled, and Jack Leaning was stumped off leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who returned 1-21.

Tattersall struck Rimmington for a straight six and improvised cleverly, and Bresnan got after Weighell in a penultimate over that disappeared for 19, including 12 off one delivery when Bresnan pulled a no-ball (two runs) for six and then lofted the free-hit for a one-bounce four over long-off.

Bresnan was dropped in the last over by Weighell at long-on off Rimmington, and Tattersall fell to the penultimate delivery when he picked out Clark at deep mid-wicket.

Tom Latham, the Durham captain, got the reply off to an explosive start when he took Jack Brooks for four successive fours in the second over.

The New Zealander scored 42 from 38 balls before he was first out with the score on 77 in the 11th over, holing out to Leaning at deep mid-wicket off Matthew Fisher.

Fisher struck again when Clark picked out Lyth at long-on, having scored 39 from 31, Fisher impressing with 2-26 from four overs.

There seemed only one winner prior to Fisher’s double strike, but Liam Trevaskis was run-out at the non-striker’s end by Ballance from mid-wicket, and two wickets in two balls from Bresnan in the 18th over turned it heavily Yorkshire’s way.

Bresnan had Will Smith caught and bowled and Collingwood caught around the corner, and then ran out Stuart Poynter at the bowler’s end in the last over to cap the victory and a fine individual display.
