England stars mark tragic loss of starlet Maynard with silence and armbands

England cricketers wore black armbands and a minute’s silence was held ahead of the one-day international against West Indies at the Oval yesterday as a mark of respect for Surrey batsman Tom Maynard.

The 23-year-old son of former England and Glamorgan batsman Matthew died when he was hit by a train on Monday.

He was widely tipped as a future England international and described by Surrey County Cricket Club as an “incredibly talented” player.

In a statement yesterday, his family said: “The news has come as a devastating blow and although the family is grateful for all the kind messages of sympathy, we would ask that we can be left to grieve in private at this very difficult and sad time.”

It is thought the cricketer may have been trying to flee from police when he was hit by a London Underground train.

Officers tried to pull over a black Mercedes, which was being driven “erratically”, an hour before his body was found on the tracks near Wimbledon Park station shortly after 5am. The Independent Police Complaints Commission was notified.

Surrey have postponed today’s Friends Life t20 game against Hampshire as a mark of respect. Glamorgan, where he played for four seasons, has also postponed its match against Worcestershire.

Surrey chairman Richard Thompson said his death was “a senseless tragedy”, describing him as “a prodigiously talented young batsman who was clearly destined for far greater things”.
