Five-wicket haul for Roberts sets up Congs win

The spin bowlers found conditions to their liking as the new season got off to an absorbing start.

The best bowling performance came from the Pudsey Congs slow left-armer Glenn Roberts. He took 5-38 as his side beat East Bierley by one run.

East Bierley needed 12 runs from the final over but despite two boundaries from Neil Gill, they only managed 10.

Andrew Rennison, top scorer on the recent MCC tour of Argentina, made 48 for East Bierley while Northamptonshire’s James Middlebrook top scored with 40 in Congs’ 183-9.

Chris Brice was another spinner in good form. His 4-21 helped seal a 98-run for champions Woodlands at Saltaire which was set up by a splendid innings of 112 not out by opener Sam Frankland. Frankland stroked five sixes and 13 fours as his side made 231-5. Irfan Amjad‘s 61 was Saltaire’s top scorer.

Leg spinner Tom Hudson marked his debut for Pudsey St Lawrence with a match-winning performance.

He took 5-44 as his new club defeated Manningham Mills by four wickets.

Opener Adam Waite (78) led the pursuit of Mills’ total of 161 as left-arm spinner Noman Ali (4-37) posed the main threat.

Lightcliffe’s Charles Roebuck scored the day’s second century with a dazzling 126 not out as last season’s runners-up beat Bradford & Bingley by 10 wickets.

Roebuck took his chance to fill the gap left by Alex Lees’s recall by Yorkshire, hitting four sixes and 19 fours as he dominated an unbroken opening stand of 156 with former Yorkshire and Derbyshire batsman Chris Taylor

Roebuck scored his runs off just 93 balls and enabled his side to overhaul Bradford & Bingley.

Yorkshire paceman Moin Ashraf had earlier taken 2-40 as Bradford & Bingley, despite 51 from Alex Atkinson, were eventually bowled out for 155.

Cleckheaton got off to a winning start as they beat Baildon by six-wickets.

Former Yorkshire paceman James Lee took 5-21 as Baildon were bowled out for 126.

Notoriously slow starters in recent seasons, opened with a comfortable six-wicket success at newly-promoted Baildon.

Dan Busfield took 6-30 on his debut for Hanging Heaton as they dismissed Morley for 63 to seal a 54-run win.

Gary Fellows was top scorer in the match with 29 on what was his first appearance for Hanging Heaton.

Busfield’s former club New Farnley marked their Bradford League debut in Division Two with a comfortable five-wicket win after bowling out Yeadon for 69.
