Forget the rain - league cricket is back

Club cricket is back. It is constrained by Covid-19 restrictions and there are temporary competitions to suit the shortened season. Of course, day one was met with rain showers that interrupted and even halted matches.

But it is back and nothing could dampen the enthusiasm with which it was met.

Before their match in the 10-team Yorkshire Premier North, the players of York and Sheriff Hutton Bridge observed a minute’s silence to remember former York captain Dan Woods, who died of cancer in March, aged 32.

Half-centuries from Guy Darwin and Alex Lilley helped York to 195-9 but a third-wicket stand of 99 between Adam Fisher (46) and Tommy Hudson (90) set Bridge on their way to a victory, clinched with just three balls to spare.

Dominic Rhodes dominated as Stamford Bridge overcame Woodhouse Grange, following up an unbeaten 80 with three quick wickets to blunt the reply.

John Gilham (40) was top scorer as Clifton Alliance beat Dunnington with only one ball left.

A century stand between William Wade (91no) and Joe Dale (51) was the heart of Acomb’s 186-8, in the win against Driffield.

In the Yorkshire South League Cup format for 2020, Alex Morris and Liam Wiles hit half-centuries for Cawthorne but the rest of the batting struggled against Robert Shaw (4-12) and Sam Kellett (3-20), with wicketkeeper Sam Hunt having a hand in five dismissals. Shaaq Choudhry (43no) steered Sheffield Collegiate past the revised 122-run target.

Hallam’s 172-8 was also adjusted because of rain and James Wolfenden (72no) and Joe Cook (61no) eased Wakefield Thornes to a 10-wicket win, while Whitley Hall enjoyed a comfortable victory at Barnsley.

Tanzeel Ali included 10 fours and three sixes in his 84 as Elsecar beat Tickhill, for whom Ross Driver made 51,

Wickersley’s Nathan Taylor followed up a top-score of 45 with 4-24 but still ended on the losing side at Doncaster Town, while Stephen Foster scored 59 for Treeton and took 3-7 and, with Ben Birtles (4-23), made sure Appleby Frodingham would no reach their target.

Luke Bridges took 5-16 as Barkisland won at Golcar, while Siraj Sajid dominated in Moorlands’ win at Armitage Bridge, taking 4-8 and hitting 51 not out.

Just two matches finished in the Yellow Group. Jonathan Butterfield (84) starred as Kirkburton overcame Shelley, while Rohan Randhawa (3-20) and Jacob Bower (3-11) helped skittle Thurstonland for 64 to set up an easy win for Elland.

Stephen Brown took 4-34 and hit 44 as Aire Wharfe champions Otley beat promoted Addingham by five wickets.

George Myers included 18 boundaries in his 107 as Rawdon set a 248 target for the other promoted side, Saltaire, who made 95 as Andrew Doidge (4-36) and Jake Hodges (4-20) struck.

At Bilton, Collingham’s Toby Jacklin followed up a 4-31 spell, a run-out and catch with an unbeaten 38 but had to be content with a tie. Awais Ejaz (5-26) had put the brake on the visitors’ reply.
